The divide of the sexes
1. THE DIVIDE OF THE SEXES
Problems of Inequality and Power
2. SEXISM IS THE LARGEST INEQUALITY
TODAY
There are many ways that women are discriminated
against today. With the world always evolving and becoming
more and more accepting having this and any discrimination is
unacceptable.
Some of the ways women are discriminated against are:
• Violence against women
• Women at work
• The way women are portrayed
• Attitudes towards women
• Still compared to men
3. VIOLENCE AGAINSTWOMEN
Although we are always making efforts to make the world a safe place for women and
everyone else. There are still far too many instances of abuse and violence against women in
north American and the world.
In North American up to 51% of
women experience some type of
violence in their life.These include
child abuse, physical violence, rape,
domestic violence and many more
In the UK 36% of people feel that a
women is wholly responsible for
being raped while drunk and 26%
believe the same if she is scantily
dressed in public
In New Delhi 92% of women reported
some form of sexual violence
experienced in public spaces.While
88% experienced verbal sexual
harassment
4. HOWTO SOLVETHEVIOLENCE
Women need to start seeking
help from formal institutions to
stop the violence.These need to
be made more readily available
as well as have awareness of
them to be increased.
Countries need to comply with
international standards and
recommendation in regards to
laws of domestic violence,
sexual harassment and marital
rape.
Data on violence against women
need to be made more readily
available and more studies need to
be done so that the issues can be
better addressed.
People in general need to be
made more aware of the issues
that are happening around the
world. Education of the issues is
the first step to taking action
against it
5. Women atWork
Women have throughout history always made less money than men this
conflict is referred to as the pay gap.The pay gap is smaller than has
been in the past and as awareness rises the gap continue to grow
smaller. With continued work we can hopefully eliminated this pay gap
completely
Estimations say that for each year of
maternity leave a mother takes she will
make 5% less in the future
Of the people in minimum wage
jobs nationally 70% were women
In North America women are paid on
average only 79% of what men would make
in their life time.
6. Closing the Gap
Companies need to start paying women fairly, all
companies claim to be working on it however real
change needs to happen.
Women can learn strategies to negotiate
for equal pay.There are workshops
available to help women get what they
deserve.
The equal pay act needs to be updated, as
it hasn’t been changed since 1963.
Stronger incentives need to be made for
employers to follow the law.
7. TheWayWomen are Portrayed
The self confidence of women is eroded everyday by the media
and the unrealistic proportions they are shown with using
photo editing software.
You rarely see normal
looking women in
advertisements and
even when celebrities
are used they are often
heavily edited
Among teenage girls
studies show that just 3
years of western
television is enough to
change their self image
8. RealWomen, Real Change
Some companies like Dove have
made great strides in presenting
real women in media, using un
edited photos and picking models
with closer to average
proportions.
In France they have imposed
fines to modeling agencies
for using models who are
under a certain BMI
11. Women MenVS.
Women are constantly compared to men
in the workforce and there are still some
industries mostly dominated by men,
that still keep most women from
entering them. professional cooking is a
good example of this.
Because women had not been accepted into
the workforce until later many of the high up
positions are being filled with men who have
had the ability to be in the industry for
longer, and women are unable to gain these
positions. This is known as the glass ceiling.
12. Women MenWith
Men and women both have unique views on
things and rather than punish their
differences we should celebrate their unique
perspectives.
The only thing that should decide if
someone is capable to do a job is their own
personal ability, and their pay should not be
affected by anything other than the
employees skills
There is almost nothing out there that a
man or woman can do that the opposite
sex could not
13. ConflictTheory
This struggle fits perfectly into conflict theory as it is
essentially men against women in an eternal power struggle
Men currently hold power over the workforce and seem to do
what they can to hold onto this power
Men also have the advantage of physical strength and size over
women and use this to abuse them far too often in the world
There are a lot of predetermined attitudes towards women's
abilities that hold them back, even though most only
become true because we make them so and women can do
anything they choose to.
14. StrongWomen of History
Marie Curie
A pioneer in the research of radioactivity
The first women to win a Nobel Prize
The only women to win two Nobel Prize
Julia Child
A pioneer in the cooking world
Became a cooking icon at a time
when all chefs were men
One of the first women to go to
Le Cordon Bleu
15. Change is NeededToday
There is no need for these inequalities to exist today especially when:
Both sexes are offered the same level of education, women actually
graduate from post secondary schooling more than men
All jobs are offered to men and women and even have ways to use
their different skills when applicable
Violence is never the answer to deal with ones problems there are
many avenues and free counselling that could help avoid these
situations
Women should be celebrated not abused or harassed, our
differences
