Introduction  Colonialism affected the method and style of education within Hong Kong, from early education to Higher Education, both sit the same exams at GCSE and A Level, although there is debate as to the difference in value of the grades.  We will focus on  Educational Philosophies  and the  University life of a student , because although similar, University life is vastly different at the same time due to cultural differences.

Educational Philosophies  United Kingdom Stresses independence Nurture curiosity Learn through play and investigation Foster love of reading  Problem – solving skills Thinking critically Being creative and innovative More time for afterschool activities Hong Kong Emphasis on diligence Chinese language itself encourages rote learning Strong belief in hard work and practice Lots of homework to learn through repetition Kids killing themselves over homework  Learning Styles
A Level Students that go onto University UK government want to see 50% of high school leavers going on to Higher Education.  Hong Kong  Government claims 60% go onto Higher Education Statistics prove that Only 18% (14,500) of Hong Kong can actually enter a local university at their age of leaving school.
A level students that then go onto complete their degree over seas. Recent Recent Figures indicate that 11% of Hong Kong Students go onto study overseas.
The Students Approach to University Life We have both experienced the Western (European) style of University and the Hong Kong style of University, therefore appreciate both cultures and styles.
The First Week of University in the UK. Fresher's week  allows students to become familiar with the representatives of their Student Union and to get to know the city or town which is home to the university, often through some form of pub crawl. Live music is also common, as are a number of organized social gatherings especially designed to allow Freshers to make new friends and to get to know their course colleagues.
