The five major German automakers announced in 2011 their agreement to incorporate a 48-volt electrical system into their vehicles. A 48-volt system was originally discussed 15 years ago as providing benefits for vehicle comfort functions, but there is now a greater need for electric vehicles and powertrain/chassis functions that could utilize the higher voltage. While a 42-volt system was unsuccessful previously due to high costs, components are now cheaper and reducing CO2 emissions provides a strong driver for 48-volt technology. Meeting stricter European emissions regulations will require technologies like stop-start, exhaust energy recovery and kinetic energy recovery, which can provide greater CO2 reductions with a 48-volt electrical system.
