CO2 emissions of vehicles: a broad and persistent problemLeonardo ENERGY
The transport sector has not seen the same decline in greenhouse gas emissions as many other sectors. CO2 emissions from passenger cars and trucks form a persistent problem and policymakers struggle to find effective solutions to meet the goals.
First, there is this ongoing race to the bottom among declared CO2 values with a growing gap with the emissions in real-world use. Second, manufacturers are only responsible for the performance of their cars under idealized circumstances, as measured during vehicle emission tests. Third, the economic and life-style aspects of owning and driving heavy and expensive cars are forces in the opposite direction. And last, the European Union has only limited systems in place for the monitoring and verification of the CO2 emissions of vehicles.
In this presentation, Norbert Ligterink (PhD), senior research scientist at TNO, guides you to understanding the complexity behind this broad and persistent problem.
CALSTART Fuels Program Manager, Dr Jasna Tomic, presented on vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology at Plug-In 2009, Long Beach, CA "Plug-in Vehicles as Sources of Power"
Electric vehicles (EVs) coupled with low-carbon electricity sources offer the potential for
reducing greenhouse gas emissions and exposure to tailpipe emissions from personal trans-
portation. In considering these benefits, it is important to address concerns of problem-
shifting. In addition, while many studies have focused on the use phase in comparing
transportation options, vehicle production is also significant when comparing conventional
and EVs.
Smart charging puts the pedal to the metal on e-mobilityLeonardo ENERGY
Smart charging represents the intersection where decarbonising power and electrifying transport meet. It creates a crucial building block for a sustainable energy system to power electric cars through solar and wind energy. Encouraging consumers to shift electric vehicle charging to hours when the power system is not under stress generates benefits for the grid, the environment and all electricity customers.
Presentation of Electric Vehicles battery packs redesign results obtained within the framework of CarE-Service European Project.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 776851.

Requirements for innovative services and business modelsOlgaRodrguezLargo
This presentation identify requirements for various stakeholders relevant for creation of innovative services and business models for electric and hybrid vehicles developed in CarE-Service Project.
Define requirements on:
1. B2B level through elaboration on the three main reuse chains: batteries, metals and techno-polymers.
2. B2C level through elaboration on car sharing/renting services.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 776851.
Engage with...Electrification of the AgriFood SectorKTN
To achieve UK’s net zero ambitious there is a requirement for the Agriculture and Food (AgriFood) sector to move to cleaner technologies. This includes the UK Government investing £80m in electrification technologies through the Driving the Electric Revolution Challenge.
From July to August 2021, KTN consulted its AgriFood networks to identify opportunities and challenges related to the adoption and the implementation of Power Electronics, Electric Machines and Drives (PEMD) in the AgriFood Sector.
Recorded on 7 October 2021, this webinar highlights the outcomes of this consultation with a broad range of stakeholders from farmers to construction and agricultural machinery companies who represent 34 organisations. KTN's Agri team also explore the obstacles and opportunities to the adoption of PEMD in the Agricultural sector.
Cross-Sector Battery Systems Innovation Network: Batteries for RailKTN
Building on the successful launch of the Cross-Sector Battery Systems Innovation Network in late September 2020, this webinar series will look into the opportunities and trends for Batteries in Defence, Maritime and Rail. Each session will bring together experts looking at the supply and demand side for batteries, technical requirements and explore how these wide range of sectors can decarbonise through batteries.
Presentation of CarE-Service Project in Metal Advanced Batteries International Congress (MaBIC19).

This report analyzes the state of the art of the current legislation and standard regulations in general concerning technical and legal requirements, together with safety issues, relative to disassembly and re-manufacturing, transportation and storage of reusable/recyclable parts and components, extended producer responsibility (EPR) regarding new parts and products put on the market. These topics were mainly focused on the batteries value chain by identifying limits and barriers of the current legislation and standard regulations for the development of CarE Service project, and furthermore by elaborating proposals to remove these limits and barriers with the clear indications of potential benefit associated.
The contents of this report were used to elaborate this deliverable as a formal position paper with proposals on legislation and standard regulations to be submitted to the relevant European stakeholders (CEN- CENELEC, Standardization Committee, National and Regional Authorities, European Commission).
This report is a living and dynamic document due to the upcoming changes in the EU regulations for the revision of the Battery Directive, the ELV Directive and the battery sustainability initiatives.
Thus, this is the first version, potentially upgradeable up to the end of the CarE-Service project.
Kurt will demonstrate how Umicore is widening the gap in xEV battery materials by harnessing product and process technology leadership and its unique position in the supply chain.

The recent cases of electric scooters catching fire have raised safety concerns. Sales of electric scooters have surged in the last few years, but the spate of fire incidents has cast a shadow on the promising industry. Exploding smartphones are not very common these days, yet news about them tends to appear from time to time. Batteries play important role in all electronic devices. In case of electric vehicles, they are the largest, most expensive, and important components. Unfortunately, batteries are susceptible to explode under unfavourable conditions. As a result, governments across the world are planning to introduce new quality standards for batteries used in EVs. Industry players are also reportedly working on the improvement of tech and batteries.
This report examines the global market, innovation, & patent filing trends targeted to fire/explosion proof batteries. Some of the prominent patent assignees include LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, Panasonic, Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd. (CATL), BYD Co. Ltd, Bosch, Mitsubishi Electric, Sumitomo Electric, Hitachi, SK Innovation, Sony, Exide Group, Toshiba, VARTA AG, GS Yuasa, Duracell Inc., Johnson Controls, and Saft.
Several Startups such as Faradion Limited, NOHMs Technologies, Inc., Lithium Werks, Log9 Materials, Cadenza Innovation, Inc. , Gridtential Energy, Ion Storage Systems, and COnovate, Inc. are also working towards manufacturing safer batteries. Global battery market is estimated to grow to USD 173 billion globally by 2026 with a CAGR of 10.3%.
