We showed the simulate impact applying the CropSyst model (Cropping systems simulation model) to crop rotations and management practices on the water balance of farming systems in a semiarid region of south-eastern Australia, where drainage beyond the root zone and rising water tables contribute to salinisation of soils and water streams.
Presented by Jawoo Koo, Zhe Guo, and Stanley Wood at the CGIAR-CSI Annual Meeting 2009: Mapping Our Future. March 31 - April 4, 2009, ILRI Campus, Nairobi, Kenya

How Space Technology can contribute on the path to Greener CottonGeocledian GmbH
Our CEO Stefan participated as a speaker at the CmiA (Cotton made in Africa) Stakeholder Conference. In his talk "How Space Technology can Support Extension Services and Improve Monitoring of Certain Standard Criteria", he provided comprehensive information on the contribution that remote sensing can make on the path to Greener Cotton. The focal points here are preventing identity fraud, monitoring production (including yield estimation) and supporting extension services for small growers.
This is a presentation on the Justification and Return on Investment on some obscure ways to place a value on the data or projects from our Coastal LIDAR flight.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Generating a custom Ruby SDK for your web service or Rails API using Smithyg2nightmarescribd
Have you ever wanted a Ruby client API to communicate with your web service? Smithy is a protocol-agnostic language for defining services and SDKs. Smithy Ruby is an implementation of Smithy that generates a Ruby SDK using a Smithy model. In this talk, we will explore Smithy and Smithy Ruby to learn how to generate custom feature-rich SDKs that can communicate with any web service, such as a Rails JSON API.

The Art of the Pitch: WordPress Relationships and SalesLaura Byrne
Clients don’t know what they don’t know. What web solutions are right for them? How does WordPress come into the picture? How do you make sure you understand scope and timeline? What do you do if sometime changes?
All these questions and more will be explored as we talk about matching clients’ needs with what your agency offers without pulling teeth or pulling your hair out. Practical tips, and strategies for successful relationship building that leads to closing the deal.
Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

State of ICS and IoT Cyber Threat Landscape Report 2024 previewPrayukth K V
The IoT and OT threat landscape report has been prepared by the Threat Research Team at Sectrio using data from Sectrio, cyber threat intelligence farming facilities spread across over 85 cities around the world. In addition, Sectrio also runs AI-based advanced threat and payload engagement facilities that serve as sinks to attract and engage sophisticated threat actors, and newer malware including new variants and latent threats that are at an earlier stage of development.
The latest edition of the OT/ICS and IoT security Threat Landscape Report 2024 also covers:
State of global ICS asset and network exposure
Sectoral targets and attacks as well as the cost of ransom
Global APT activity, AI usage, actor and tactic profiles, and implications
Rise in volumes of AI-powered cyberattacks
Major cyber events in 2024
Malware and malicious payload trends
Cyberattack types and targets
Vulnerability exploit attempts on CVEs
Attacks on counties – USA
Expansion of bot farms – how, where, and why
In-depth analysis of the cyber threat landscape across North America, South America, Europe, APAC, and the Middle East
Why are attacks on smart factories rising?
Cyber risk predictions

[Day 3] The Csi Cg Ag Commons Future
1. AGCommons
The CSI/CG
AGCommons Future
where and when do we meet?
2. Primary focus
Provide location-specific,
timely advisory services to
– Farmer
– Farmer community
– Farm radio station
– Cooperatives
– Grassroots orgs and NGOs
– Agro-market sector
– Government
– Research centres
– Training institutes
3. What are such information service
characteristics?
Must be relevant Must be actionable
– filter out noise – informs a decision
– know the receiver – leads to work activity
• – tradition may be in the way
history
• status quo
Must be timely
• plans
– pro-active advice
• location of operation
– partly real-time data based
• needs and wishes
Must be reliable Must be parsable
– build up trust – illiteracy, irrationality
– know past advices – language barriers
– advice good-practice – cultural barriers
10. GEONETCAST Capabilities : visualization
Every 15 minutes another image is animated -> 96 / day
Features:
nearly fully automated
settings used can be
easily changed, like:
•projection
•area of interest
•change background
animation prepared by
standard Windows XP

done within 20 minutes
Virtually every derived parameter in a time
series can be animated, also with annotation

13. CGIAR researcher role
Step out of your research shell for this session only
Reflect on big picture in the agro sector and role of
CG
Reflect on what your research efforts produce
– in data sources
– in understanding and knowledge
that is exploitable to farmers and farmer orgs.
Towards location-specific knowledge exploitation for
advisory services
What can be exploited?
14. Provocations
Accessibility
Map
– not secured through a web portal
– pre-21st century technique to
The farm-specific data stack
convey spatial, static information
– farmer profiling
– not your farmer info-product
Agro-economic development
Seasonality
– crop rotation
– need to understand the seasons
– farm development, 5-year plans
of all processes (also roads,
inputs, markets) and their – district produce diversification
dependencies
Cultural diversity is location-
Real-time data specific
– shorten the info-cycles – no one-size-fits-all solutions
– crucial for up-to-date advisories Making apps location-unspecific
and short-term predictions that (=generic)
can help build trust
Farmer sensor network
– she knows the farm
– surveillances => local early
warning
– together they know the district
– ground-truthing army
15. Themes for discussion now …
The communication channels
Collaboration schemes for AGC
Business models and sustainable
approaches
The potential of real-time data and the wall-
to-wall ambition
The farmer peer-to-peer e-Bay and long-term
farmer information communities
Ex ante impact assessment on farmer
communities
