The document describes the emergence of a new type of businessman in Croatia called the "Croatian business-mutant". This mutant is highly resilient to crises, legal issues, and other challenges. The mutant sees everything as an opportunity and has a vast range of unpredictable business activities. An example is provided of a mutant named "Rat" who has had multiple bankruptcies, legal issues, and owns many diverse businesses. The conclusion is that these mutants will be difficult to stop and may expand beyond Croatia due to their adaptability and hunger for new opportunities.

1. The Croatian business-mutant

When we were naive high-school students, we believed that the process of evolution
ends with man (amoebas-amphibians-mammals etc.), but today, after two decades of
Croatian privatization, wild capitalsim and exposure to various political and economic
perversions, we know better. We are witnessing the creation of a completely new
biological species – the Croatian business-mutant. This is a unique genetically-
sociologically-culturological hybrid resilient to diseases, shocks, stress, povery,
political pressures, poisons, crisis, falling apart of the state, legal insecurity... In about
10 years, when an apocalypse wipes out everything off the face of the Earth, the only
ones left standing will be some species of reptiles, insects and Croatian business-
mutants.
In general, we can divide Croatian businessmen into four basic categories. The first
category are the so-called cyclists (taken from the famous metaphor by a prominent
Croatian businessman Miroslav Kulte who compared a succesful business running to
riding a bicycle), who are relatively easy to recognize because they had nothing until
the year 1990, after which they built business empires worth billions of euros in a
matter of years, with the help of the National Party. The second prominent group of
Croatian businessmen, also known as The Golden Youth, consists of half-educated,
spoiled brats with parents in high places, who are intertwined through a web of family
and party relations, and almost completely control economic sectors connected to
state administration, parties, companies owned completely or partially by the state,
etc. The third category is made out of suckers who still believe that honest and
persistant work pays off, and who represent the system error in the course of
Croatian entrepreneurial evolution (like atavism – a child with a tail, or a human baby
with three pairs of nipples). It goes without saying that this category has no
evolutionary chance of survival, unless they blend with some of the legitimate parts of
the Croatian economic nomenclature. Finally, in the fourth group we have the
aforementioned Croatian business-mutants, who are the icing on the cake of the
Croatian economic evolution and who have appeared on the entrepreneurial scene
during the last decade.
Boris (34), known under the name Rat (cro: Stakor) in the entrepreneurial scene, who
has a secret post-graduate diploma in electrical engineering, a complete knowledge
of four languages (he admits to knowing one when drunk), owns three companies
and one trade, went bankrupt two times successfully, is a member of five political
parties ranging from the left to the extremely right side, has six unrealized criminal
charges, ruined two companies with about forty employees, and sucessfuly took
over a few real-estate in the center of Zagreb from the retired. He has been an
entrepreneur for eight years. The range of his business activities is more
comprehensive than a middle-sized phone book – construction, legal consulting,
transboundary transportation of people and collecting debts, placement of software
packages, catering, Ukrainian prostitutes and airplane parts. One of his greatest
achievements was selling 10 thousand Dinamo jerseys in Serbia.
The Croatian business-mutant sees everything around him as food. It doesn't matter
if we are talking about companies, organisations, employees, or real estate – the only
feeling he experiences is hunger. And what is a frog supposed to feel when faced

2. with a fly? We can say with a 100-percent certainty that it's only a matter of time
when the mutants are going to expand beyond Croatian borders. Atila's hordes are
little babies compared to them. The rotten western democracies with their weak state
apparatus will definitely be no match for them.As if they can stop the southeastern
plague with their routine means of legal order – such as the police and taxes! Our
man will survive even if you crack his head open with a rock. Besides, if Europe
couldn't eradicate the common rat throughout its history, it will definitely not stand a
chance against evolutions's most perfect species – the Croatian business-mutant.
