I think we can all agree that conducting a risk assessment in the forefront is perhaps the most important part of any emergency response plan. This sets the foundation for identifying risks and hazards that our response area could be exposed to. Planning, training, coordination and communication are equally as important. Planning helps us to outline how we would respond in kind to the incidents, risks and hazards that we identified in our risk assessment. Training ensures that each agency involved is on not only on the same page but understand their responsibilities once that plan is enacted. Coordination goes hand in hand with training, properly coordinated actions results in a well coordinated dance with everyone knowing their part. And communication, we cannot stress enough how important communication is because if we cannot properly transmit information in real time within the responding agencies, our plan is going to suffer and things could be missed.
The best way to ensure all of these steps are followed and the plan gets executed properly is simply to train on it quarterly as well as hold hot washes, an after action get together where what went right and what went wrong is discussed so that we can improve. Continuous training as well as constant communication is the only way we all get on the same page.

A successful emergency operations plan (EOP) requires cooperation and understanding from all groups and agencies involved. A major component of the EOP is the base plan. “The base plan: Contains the most comprehensive information about the community, its risks, its statutory authorities, and the general concept by which emergency operations are conducted (Haddow et al, 2021, p. 136). This is an important component because it lays out what the problem is, the risks or hazards it proposes, and who has what authority or roles and responsibilities for certain actions. This supports the idea that risk assessment is an important part of the EOP. Risk assessment can also be a great tool for inclusion and preparation of all supporting organizations. Including them in the risk assessment conversation will allow any uncertainty in the plan to be vocalized and help with better cohesion as the plan is implemented.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has taken the broad spectrum of terrorism and divided the types into two areas: domestic terrorism and international terrorism. The definitions for both areas are rather broad in scope. According to Watson, domestic terrorism is defined by the FBI as “the unlawful use, or threatened use, of violence by a group or individual based and operating entirely within the United States (or its territories) without foreign direction” (para. 8). Additionally, the FBI uses the definition of “violent acts or acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or any state, or that would be a criminal violation if committed within the jurisdiction of the United States or any state. Acts are intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, influence the policy of a government, or affect the conduct of a government” (para. 9) for their international terrorism category.
Both domestic and international terrorism is rooted in extremist and their ideals and the use of tactics that promote terror to further their agenda. According to Martin (2019), the typical objectives for terrorism are to change the existing order, social disruption, psychological disruption, and creating a revolutionary environment (pp. 10-11).
Eric Rudolph was responsible for the July 27, 1996 bombing during the XXVI Summer Olympiad in Atlanta when he used a nail-laden pipe bomb in Centennial Olympic Park that killed a woman who had driven with her daughter to Atlanta to celebrate the Olympics, and injured over 100 others (History, 2010, para. 1). According to the FBI, the motives behind Rudolph’s attack included his anti-government, anti-gay, and other biases (para. 12).

Here’s the thing, in my Week 1 Forum I addressed a major concern of mine. This concern surfaced after the investigation into the 9/11 attacks. Since the change in national security efforts over the last 17 years, the perspectives portrayed by the 9/11 Commission have guided our Nation’s Intelligence Community (IC) and the strategies and legislation put into place to prevent another chaotic event. Basically, this class confirmed what we all have learned by now: 9/11 could have been prevented. Unfortunately, the truth of the matter is more enhanced technology, better information exchange, and advanced training are some issues which ushered in a blatant attack under the radar.
The United States Government does deserve some credit. There have been nearly 20 years of research, special panels, investigative committees, funding grants, training guidelines, new government entities, and so much more which have helped to contribute to a more effective fight against terror. In fact, much of the change has begun to focus on terror prevention, rather than a centralized approach on how to respond to attacks.
This forum asks us to state whether or not our opinions have changed since we began this course to now. I have to say, my opinion has changed somewhat for the better. When I first began this journey into the study of Homeland and National Security, I had no idea the changes that had taken place since 9/11. In regards to my specific area of interest, I have gained more knowledge about what is actually going on. I believe the government has been making a concerted effort to ensure that law enforcement agencies are privy to pertinent matters of national security. When I know it seems the most valuable information will never be trusted in the hands of those without Top Secret clearances, I cannot help but feel this may be a barrier between responding to attacks and the ability to prevent them in the first place.
My first post mentioned the idea that law enforcement training academies have been uprooted, and the training has seen a trend toward national security efforts (Flores, 2012). In fact, when I went through the academy over 2 years ago, I recall some training about criminal profiling and crime statistics that would reveal certain aspects of those who make terrorist watch lists. Additionally, local projects such as Business Partners Against Terrorism (BPAT) have been implemented and altered into national models. These models have been spread throughout the nation as Fusion Centers, which act as central hubs for information exchange between law enforcement and security agencies at all levels of the government (Schaible & Sheffield, 2012).

These are the current events I chose. I believe both of them tie directly to things we have covered in the last two weeks.
Five Handguns Caught at Baltimore/Washington Checkpoints in June
So far this has brought the total for this year to just one less that the total for all of 2020. In each instance TSA found the guns using x-rays for carry-on bags during passenger check in. This ties to the course so far because TSA was created for homeland security, and this is an example of the work they do.
White House urges mayors to meet with state cybersecurity officials on ransomware.
The White House is asking for Mayors to be more proactive with their cybersecurity measures in light of all the recent ransomware attacks. This is tied to this course so far because we have covered homeland security policies, and even spent some time coming up with changes we would suggest to help. This article pushes that further by acknowledging that it is an ongoing issue that we must all stay on top of.

The McDonald’s Corporation sustained a data breach when it was discovered that unauthorized activity was being performed on an internal server from outside sources (Haddon, 2021). The crime affected some data from the U.S., South Korea, and Taiwan operations. Employee and customer personal information was compromised, but no financial data was compromised. Information overload! The phrase alone is enough to strike terror into the hardiest of managers; it presages the breakdown of society as we know it and the failure of management to cope with change. The media constantly dissect the forthcoming collapse brought on by TMI ("Too Much Information"), even as they themselves pile up larger and larger dossiers on the subject, and we are frequently informed that it is our own damn fault that we are drowning in data, since we simply can't discriminate between the important stuff and everything else. Hence, the info-tsunami warning signs posted all along what we once so naively called the "information superhighway".
Of course, this is arrant nonsense -- human beings have been suffering from information overload in varying forms since about the time we hit the ground and found ourselves simultaneously running after the antelope and away from the lion. There's no question that the human mind has a limited capacity to process information, but after several million years we've gotten pretty good at figuring out how to handle a lot. The two basic tricks turn out to be distinguishing between short-term and long-term information storage, and "chunking" -- putting things in a limited number of baskets. This isn't primarily a course in the psychology of memory -- it's about information tools and systems -- but in fact the same things that make our information tools and systems work are the same things that have kept us near the antelopes and away from the lions (mostly) for the last million years or so. So we're beginning this course by thinking about information tools, what makes them like and unlike other kinds of tools, how the concept of a socio-technical system (in which social and behavioral functions shape results as much as does the technology itself) helps make sense of what we're facing, and why the technology just might win after all.
Let's start with a little historical review. Amy Blair has recently done a very intriguing summary of just why information overload isn't something that we, or still less our kids, dreamed up -- people have been drowning in data for ages regardless of the tools at their disposal:

The formation of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is an example of a government-wide change initiative to address concerns stemming from a traumatic event. Leading the concerns was dissatisfaction with the way in which the multitude of departments responded, communicated and coordinated their efforts on a macro scale. A lack of an integrated command system was at the heart of this dissatisfaction. The Command systems were designed to work independently, not together. Although New York City mayor, Rudolph Giulianni, instituted a plan to minimize potential conflict among responding agencies, which may have areas of overlapping expertise and responsibility at a local level, the equivalent did not exist at the federal level. The DHS is the federal equivalent to establish channels of communication necessary for smooth operation.

What's the paper about?
As Dr. Appiah discussed in class today, for this final paper, you're being given a wide latitude to write an in-depth, argumentative essay on the subject of your choosing. The only limitations are that (1) it must be about gender, human rights, or economic inequality, either in a national or international context, and (2) it must include some of the philosophical thought of at least two of the traditions we've covered (Confucian, Islamic, or "Western"/Liberal).
How will I be grading it?
I will use the same rubric I used to evaluate the midterm papers for this essay. You can consult your midterm papers for details on this.
Where do I start?
Here are a few pointers on how to get started. (None of what I say here is
necessary
for the paper, just suggestions).
1. Start with a specific human right or moral claim. The
UDHR
is a great place to begin.
2. Pick a human right. For example, the UDHR guarantees the right to freedom of religion.
3. Pick two or three of the traditions we've covered. In my case, I'd compare, say, a liberal perspective on freedom of religion and an Islamic perspective on freedom of religion.
4. Formulate a thesis. For example, "in this paper, I will argue that freedom of religion, conceived of as a human right guaranteed in the UDHR, is both (a) a non-negotiable element of human dignity and (b) incompatible with basic Koranic obligations and the Islamic tradition of commanding and forbidding." This thesis should be
argumentative
. You ought to take a stand, and argue in favor of one perspective's interpretation or for your own new perspective. Papers that simply list what each tradition would say on an issue would be inadequate. In formulating your thesis, remember that the narrower your thesis, the easier it will be to defend. Narrow theses are the bread and butter of philosophy papers!
5. Assemble the textual support for this thesis. Go through the syllabus and compile each of the articles that we've covered that is relevant to this thesis - both the required and supplemental readings.
6. Reference your notes for broad outlines of arguments that are relevant to your thesis. In this case, I'd want to use at least Kant, Rawls, and Singer to put together an argument for (a) above, and Cook's work to put together the argument for (b) above.
7. As you're putting together these arguments, refer back to the texts we've covered t.

Ben has been reviewing the invoices from the IT vendor that is providing design and programming services for the CRM implementation. Ben is working with this vendor on a number of different projects, and there are a handful of people that work on multiple projects for him, including the CRM implementation. He just told you that there are some problems with the invoices, and he is not sure what to do about them.

Four people who started at Lehman Brothers the day it
failed reflect on the lessons they’ve learned.

September 15, 2008, was one of the darkest days in the
history of Wall Street. For four new college graduates,
it was also their first day of work at Lehman Brothers
Holdings Inc.

Grossman walked through the doors of Lehman just as
the venerable investment bank filed for bankruptcy
protection, an event that sent shockwaves around the
globe. The aftershocks continue to define many aspects
of American life a decade later.
The crisis provided these unlucky millennials with a
new perspective. Big institutions were no longer
infallible. Wall Street no longer offered a guaranteed
career path. Life was more fragile than they knew.

My junior year at Amherst, everyone was trying to get
an internship in New York at a bank, and I got one with
Lehman’s investment management division. All we
heard from executives was that Lehman was going to
be the next Goldman Sachs.
The summer of 2008 I moved to New York for training.
I was definitely getting nervous that maybe they would
start laying people off. But the messaging at Lehman
was ‘don’t worry.’ There’s no way the government
would let anything happen to a company as big as
Lehman.
I was preparing for a licensing exam in my apartment
on Sunday, Sept. 14, and there was a new news story
every minute. I refreshed my computer browser and all
a sudden there was a headline that Lehman declares
bankruptcy. I got that feeling in the pit of my stomach.
The next day we all went in to work, but everyone was a
zombie.
I kept working there, but this cloud was hanging over
us. I worked in the fund of hedge funds group for two
and a half years, but then got super jaded. I went to
Peru and worked for a nonprofit for almost a year.
A decade ago I defended the finance industry. Looking
back, it’s tough to be socially conscious and work in it.

more practical applications that can apply to a lot of

years at Harvard. I graduated in 2008 and started six
weeks of training, and the first day on the job was the
bankruptcy. I remember contacting HR and I asked,

What do Bank of America, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, and Goldman Sachs have in common? All paid hefty fines for purportedly misleading investors about mortgage-backed securities. In fact, these companies paid the government a total of $50 billion in fines. The payments were made in lieu of criminal prosecutions.
Today, several hundred thousand federal rules that apply to businesses carry some form of criminal penalty. That is in addition to more than four thousand federal laws, many of which carry criminal sanctions for their violation. From 2000 to 2019, about 3,200 corporations either were convicted or pleaded guilty to violating federal statutes or rules.
Criminal Convictions
The first successful criminal conviction in a federal court against a company—the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad—was upheld by the Supreme Court in 1909 (the violation: cutting prices). Many other successful convictions followed.
One landmark case developed the
aggregation test
, now called the Doctrine of Collective Knowledge. This test aggregates the omissions and acts of two or more persons in a corporation, thereby constructing an
actus reus
and a
mens rea
out of the conduct and knowledge of several individuals.
Not all government attempts at applying criminal law to corporations survive. Courts have sometimes found insufficient evidence to show that a company acted with specific intent to commit a crime. Often, however, companies choose to reach settlement agreements with the government rather than fight criminal indictments.
Many Pay Substantial Fines in Lieu of Prosecution
More than four hundred corporations reached so-called non-prosecution agreements with the government from 2000 to the beginning of 2019. These agreements typically involve multimillion- or multibillion-dollar fines. This number does not include fines paid to the Environmental Protection Agency or to the Fish and Wildlife Service.
According to law professors Margaret Lemos and Max Minzner, “Public enforcers often seek large monetary awards for self-interested reasons divorced from the public interest and deterrents. The incentives are strongest when enforcement agencies are permitted to retain all or some of the proceeds of enforcement.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has taken the broad spectrum of terrorism and divided the types into two areas: domestic terrorism and international terrorism. The definitions for both areas are rather broad in scope. According to Watson, domestic terrorism is defined by the FBI as “the unlawful use, or threatened use, of violence by a group or individual based and operating entirely within the United States (or its territories) without foreign direction” (para. 8). Additionally, the FBI uses the definition of “violent acts or acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or any state, or that would be a criminal violation if committed within the jurisdiction of the United States or any state. Acts are intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, influence the policy of a government, or affect the conduct of a government” (para. 9) for their international terrorism category.
Both domestic and international terrorism is rooted in extremist and their ideals and the use of tactics that promote terror to further their agenda. According to Martin (2019), the typical objectives for terrorism are to change the existing order, social disruption, psychological disruption, and creating a revolutionary environment (pp. 10-11).
Eric Rudolph was responsible for the July 27, 1996 bombing during the XXVI Summer Olympiad in Atlanta when he used a nail-laden pipe bomb in Centennial Olympic Park that killed a woman who had driven with her daughter to Atlanta to celebrate the Olympics, and injured over 100 others (History, 2010, para. 1). According to the FBI, the motives behind Rudolph’s attack included his anti-government, anti-gay, and other biases (para. 12).

Here’s the thing, in my Week 1 Forum I addressed a major concern of mine. This concern surfaced after the investigation into the 9/11 attacks. Since the change in national security efforts over the last 17 years, the perspectives portrayed by the 9/11 Commission have guided our Nation’s Intelligence Community (IC) and the strategies and legislation put into place to prevent another chaotic event. Basically, this class confirmed what we all have learned by now: 9/11 could have been prevented. Unfortunately, the truth of the matter is more enhanced technology, better information exchange, and advanced training are some issues which ushered in a blatant attack under the radar.
The United States Government does deserve some credit. There have been nearly 20 years of research, special panels, investigative committees, funding grants, training guidelines, new government entities, and so much more which have helped to contribute to a more effective fight against terror. In fact, much of the change has begun to focus on terror prevention, rather than a centralized approach on how to respond to attacks.
This forum asks us to state whether or not our opinions have changed since we began this course to now. I have to say, my opinion has changed somewhat for the better. When I first began this journey into the study of Homeland and National Security, I had no idea the changes that had taken place since 9/11. In regards to my specific area of interest, I have gained more knowledge about what is actually going on. I believe the government has been making a concerted effort to ensure that law enforcement agencies are privy to pertinent matters of national security. When I know it seems the most valuable information will never be trusted in the hands of those without Top Secret clearances, I cannot help but feel this may be a barrier between responding to attacks and the ability to prevent them in the first place.
My first post mentioned the idea that law enforcement training academies have been uprooted, and the training has seen a trend toward national security efforts (Flores, 2012). In fact, when I went through the academy over 2 years ago, I recall some training about criminal profiling and crime statistics that would reveal certain aspects of those who make terrorist watch lists. Additionally, local projects such as Business Partners Against Terrorism (BPAT) have been implemented and altered into national models. These models have been spread throughout the nation as Fusion Centers, which act as central hubs for information exchange between law enforcement and security agencies at all levels of the government (Schaible & Sheffield, 2012).

Hello everyone.
These are the current events I chose. I believe both of them tie directly to things we have covered in the last two weeks.
Five Handguns Caught at Baltimore/Washington Checkpoints in June
So far this has brought the total for this year to just one less that the total for all of 2020. In each instance TSA found the guns using x-rays for carry-on bags during passenger check in. This ties to the course so far because TSA was created for homeland security, and this is an example of the work they do.
White House urges mayors to meet with state cybersecurity officials on ransomware.
The White House is asking for Mayors to be more proactive with their cybersecurity measures in light of all the recent ransomware attacks. This is tied to this course so far because we have covered homeland security policies, and even spent some time coming up with changes we would suggest to help. This article pushes that further by acknowledging that it is an ongoing issue that we must all stay on top of.

The McDonald’s Corporation sustained a data breach when it was discovered that unauthorized activity was being performed on an internal server from outside sources (Haddon, 2021). The crime affected some data from the U.S., South Korea, and Taiwan operations. Employee and customer personal information was compromised, but no financial data was compromised. I use this is as an example of a cybercrime being committed to a U.S. based company with International operations. This type of crime demonstrates the importance of cyber-protection within the private sector on their internal networks as referenced in our textbook (Bullock, et al., 2018).

Information overload! The phrase alone is enough to strike terror into the hardiest of managers; it presages the breakdown of society as we know it and the failure of management to cope with change. The media constantly dissect the forthcoming collapse brought on by TMI ("Too Much Information"), even as they themselves pile up larger and larger dossiers on the subject, and we are frequently informed that it is our own damn fault that we are drowning in data, since we simply can't discriminate between the important stuff and everything else. Hence, the info-tsunami warning signs posted all along what we once so naively called the "information superhighway".
Of course, this is arrant nonsense -- human beings have been suffering from information overload in varying forms since about the time we hit the ground and found ourselves simultaneously running after the antelope and away from the lion. There's no question that the human mind has a limited capacity to process information, but after several million years we've gotten pretty good at figuring out how to handle a lot. The two basic tricks turn out to be distinguishing between short-term and long-term information storage, and "chunking" -- putting things in a limited number of baskets. This isn't primarily a course in the psychology of memory -- it's about information tools and systems -- but in fact the same things that make our information tools and systems work are the same things that have kept us near the antelopes and away from the lions (mostly) for the last million years or so. So we're beginning this course by thinking about information tools, what makes them like and unlike other kinds of tools, how the concept of a socio-technical system (in which social and behavioral functions shape results as much as does the technology itself) helps make sense of what we're facing, and why the technology just might win after all.
Let's start with a little historical review. Amy Blair has recently done a very intriguing summary of just why information overload isn't something that we, or still less our kids, dreamed up -- people have been drowning in data for ages regardless of the tools at their disposal:

Great Buys is an internet-based company headquartered in New York that sells household electronics to consumers in the United States. The management team at Great Buys has some concerns about its online contracting process. The management team asks you, the company’s contract manager, to work with your team and address their concerns that include the following:
· Great Buys isn’t sure it has a binding contract with its customers, since the contract is completely online and in electronic format.
· Consumers have argued they are not bound to the online contract because there’s no handwritten “pen and ink” signature.
· Great Buys also wants to know if any international laws will apply once the company starts selling its electronic products internationally.
· Great Buys has been sued in different state courts all over the country, and it would like to know if an arbitration clause requiring that arbitration be conducted in New York City will be enforceable.

The formation of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is an example of a government-wide change initiative to address concerns stemming from a traumatic event. Leading the concerns was dissatisfaction with the way in which the multitude of departments responded, communicated and coordinated their efforts on a macro scale. A lack of an integrated command system was at the heart of this dissatisfaction. The Command systems were designed to work independently, not together. Although New York City mayor, Rudolph Giulianni, instituted a plan to minimize potential conflict among responding agencies, which may have areas of overlapping expertise and responsibility at a local level, the equivalent did not exist at the federal level. The DHS is the federal equivalent to establish channels of communication necessary for smooth operation.
The purpose of this memorandum addresses the following:
· Mission - What does the organization do?
· Vision - What does the organization expect to accomplish?
· Values - What cultural and behavioral norms are established at the senior leadership level and how are they manifested at the operational levels?
· Structure - How is it organized at the senior management level, i.e. what are the executive-level departments or lines of business?
· Implementation - How are organizational Mission, Vision and Values implemented within the departments or lines of business?
· Context - What are the contextual factors (internal and external) that influence the organization's culture and performance?
· Opportunity - What opportunities exist for an HR intervention that will help advance the organizational mission?
The DHS is the collective of more than twenty federal offices. The DHS was formed in response to the terror attacks on September 11th, 2001 when a need for coordination and improved communication among the various government offices became apparent. Since its inception in November 2002, DHS seeks to unify and integrate information and activities to ensure domestic safety and prevention of future terrorist attacks. The DHS officially opened its doors in March 2003 and subsequently went through reorganization in July 2005.

What's the paper about?
As Dr. Appiah discussed in class today, for this final paper, you're being given a wide latitude to write an in-depth, argumentative essay on the subject of your choosing. The only limitations are that (1) it must be about gender, human rights, or economic inequality, either in a national or international context, and (2) it must include some of the philosophical thought of at least two of the traditions we've covered (Confucian, Islamic, or "Western"/Liberal).
How will I be grading it?
I will use the same rubric I used to evaluate the midterm papers for this essay. You can consult your midterm papers for details on this.
Where do I start?
Here are a few pointers on how to get started. (None of what I say here is
necessary
for the paper, just suggestions).
1. Start with a specific human right or moral claim. The
UDHR
is a great place to begin.
2. Pick a human right. For example, the UDHR guarantees the right to freedom of religion.
3. Pick two or three of the traditions we've covered. In my case, I'd compare, say, a liberal perspective on freedom of religion and an Islamic perspective on freedom of religion.
4. Formulate a thesis. For example, "in this paper, I will argue that freedom of religion, conceived of as a human right guaranteed in the UDHR, is both (a) a non-negotiable element of human dignity and (b) incompatible with basic Koranic obligations and the Islamic tradition of commanding and forbidding." This thesis should be
argumentative
. You ought to take a stand, and argue in favor of one perspective's interpretation or for your own new perspective. Papers that simply list what each tradition would say on an issue would be inadequate. In formulating your thesis, remember that the narrower your thesis, the easier it will be to defend. Narrow theses are the bread and butter of philosophy papers!
5. Assemble the textual support for this thesis. Go through the syllabus and compile each of the articles that we've covered that is relevant to this thesis - both the required and supplemental readings.
6. Reference your notes for broad outlines of arguments that are relevant to your thesis. In this case, I'd want to use at least Kant, Rawls, and Singer to put together an argument for (a) above, and Cook's work to put together the argument for (b) above.
7. As you're putting together these arguments, refer back to the texts we've covered t.

Ben has been reviewing the invoices from the IT vendor that is providing design and programming services for the CRM implementation. Ben is working with this vendor on a number of different projects, and there are a handful of people that work on multiple projects for him, including the CRM implementation. He just told you that there are some problems with the invoices, and he is not sure what to do about them.
George is working on the CRM implementation and 2 other smaller projects. His hours look okay when Ben first looks at them. and AI/Machine Learning leader for The Boeing Company. He leads teams of data
scientists in designing, developing, and deploying machine learning and artificial
intelligence algorithms ranging from regression and classification to computer
vision/deep learning models across engineering, manufacturing, supply chain,
robotics, in-flight mechanics, and a multitude of other functions in the aerospace
domain. Prior to joining Boeing, Dr. Venkatraman was on the Information Systems
faculty at Washington State University. He holds a Ph.D. in Information Systems.
CHRISTY M. K. CHEUNG ([email protected]; corresponding author) is an
Associate Professor at Hong Kong Baptist University. She earned a Ph.D. in

September 15, 2008, was one of the darkest days in the
history of Wall Street. For four new college graduates,
it was also their first day of work at Lehman Brothers
Holdings Inc.
Sohil Sheth, Luvleen Sidhu, Justin Gaines and Brian
Grossman walked through the doors of Lehman just as
the venerable investment bank filed for bankruptcy
protection, an event that sent shockwaves around the

My junior year at Amherst, everyone was trying to get
an internship in New York at a bank, and I got one with
Lehman’s investment management division. All we
heard from executives was that Lehman was going to
be the next Goldman Sachs.
The summer of 2008 I moved to New York for training.
I was definitely getting nervous that maybe they would
start laying people off. But the messaging at Lehman
was ‘don’t worry.’ There’s no way the government
would let anything happen to a company as big as
Lehman.
I was preparing for a licensing exam in my apartment
on Sunday, Sept. 14, and there was a new news story
every minute. I refreshed my computer browser and all
a sudden there was a headline that Lehman declares
bankruptcy. I got that feeling in the pit of my stomach.
The next day we all went in to work, but everyone was a
zombie.
I kept working there, but this cloud was hanging over
us. I worked in the fund of hedge funds group for two
and a half years, but then got super jaded. I went to
Peru and worked for a nonprofit for almost a year.
A decade ago I defended the finance industry. Looking
back, it’s tough to be socially conscious and work in it.

more practical applications that can apply to a lot of

What do Bank of America, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, and Goldman Sachs have in common? All paid hefty fines for purportedly misleading investors about mortgage-backed securities. In fact, these companies paid the government a total of $50 billion in fines. The payments were made in lieu of criminal prosecutions.
Today, several hundred thousand federal rules that apply to businesses carry some form of criminal penalty. That is in addition to more than four thousand federal laws, many of which carry criminal sanctions for their violation. From 2000 to 2019, about 3,200 corporations either were convicted or pleaded guilty to violating federal statutes or rules.
Criminal Convictions
The first successful criminal conviction in a federal court against a company—the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad—was upheld by the Supreme Court in 1909 (the violation: cutting prices). Many other successful convictions followed.
One landmark case developed the
aggregation test
, now called the Doctrine of Collective Knowledge. This test aggregates the omissions and acts of two or more persons in a corporation, thereby constructing an
actus reus
and a
mens rea
out of the conduct and knowledge of several individuals.
Not all government attempts at applying criminal law to corporations survive. Courts have sometimes found insufficient evidence to show that a company acted with specific intent to commit a crime. Often, however, companies choose to reach settlement agreements with the government rather than fight criminal indictments.
Many Pay Substantial Fines in Lieu of Prosecution
More than four hundred corporations reached so-called non-prosecution agreements with the government from 2000 to the beginning of 2019. These agreements typically involve multimillion- or multibillion-dollar fines. This number does not include fines paid to the Environmental Protection Agency or to the Fish and Wildlife Service.
According to law professors Margaret Lemos and Max Minzner, “Public enforcers often seek large monetary awards for self-interested reasons divorced from the public interest and deterrents. The incentives are strongest when enforcement agencies are permitted to retain all or some of the proceeds of enforcement.”

One scientific speculation about the beginning of ocean water declares that as Earth developed from a gas and dust cloud more than 4.5 billion years ago, an enormous quantity of insubstantial elements such as oxygen and hydrogen became confined inside the liquefied inner part of the newly formed planet (Advameg, 2013). In the course of the first few billion years following planets formation, these basic gases emerged across thousands of miles of red-hot and liquefying rock to discharge on the Earth’s surface through fissures (long narrow cracks) and volcanoes.
Inside the earth and atop the exterior, the gas hydrogen joined oxygen developing water. Massive amounts of liquid blanketed the planet as an extraordinarily heavy atmosphere of water cloud. Close to the uppermost part of the atmosphere, where high temperature may possibly dissipate to outward reaches of the earth, water vapor concentrated to a liquid form and dropped into the stratum below, chilling the level. This atmospheric cool down procedure lasted till the initial precipitation dropped to the planet’s young exterior and flared into a misty haze. This came to pass as the creation of an astonishing downpour that through the course of time, progressively filled the ocean cavities.
There are three major classes of tectonic plate boundaries: divergent boundaries, covergent boundaries, and transform boundaries. ABSTRACT. Most of the attention in the last few decades in the human services field has been on the development of culturally competent practice with little attention to the context of this practice. This analysis and case study focuses on the organizational context of social service practitioners seeking to respond effectively to an increasingly diverse client population. Specific attention is given to the development of a working definition of a culturally responsive social service agency. This definition is used to assess a case study of a public sector county social service agency that has a substantial history in promoting culturally responsive practices. The implications for future management practices are noted in the conclusion.

In her debut essay collection, Not That
Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You
What She’s “Learned,” Dunham demon-
strates her 28-year-old voice’s admirable
range. While some celebrity essay col-
lections and memoirs are lackluster,
even embarrassing to read, Not That Kind
of Girl suffers few missteps. Dunham’s
cinematic flair translates to the page
with vigor and clarity—not unlike the
late Nora Ephron, to whom she is often
compared and to whom the book is
dedicated (along with Dunham’s family
and her boyfriend Jack Antonoff of the
indie-rock band fun.). Instead of tossing
pithy, pseudo-motivational observations
at the reader, Dunham has crafted warm,
intelligent writing that is both deeply
personal and engaging, clustered in five
topical sections: “Love & Sex,” “Body,”
“Friendship,” “Work” and “Big Picture.”
Each of the 29 pieces—essays mixed
with lists, like “18 Unlikely Things I’ve
Said Flirtatiously”—is confident and
assured, sidestepping self-deprecation
and instead offering intense self-
examination. Dunham’s self-awareness
can almost overwhelm with truthiness,
as in “Barry,” her glancing, tragicomic
account of being raped by a “mustachioed
campus Republican” who, among other
nonconsensual acts, removes his condom
without her permission or knowledge.
“A sexual encounter that no one can
classify properly” sounds precisely like
a voice of her generation, one struggling
to come to terms with rape culture.
(And yet, “I feel like there are fifty ways
it’s my fault . . . But I also know that at no
moment did I consent to being handled
that way” sounds like a voice of every
generation of women.)
Unlike Hannah Horvath, Dunham in
her self-awareness does not come across
as self-obsessed. When she is absurd,
she acknowledges that absurdity. “13

Although the so-called ‘CSI effect’ has received attention in the literature for the
influence of forensic science television on jurors’ expectations of evidence
admitted into trials, less research explores the influence of such television
programs on university students enrolled in forensic science degrees. This paper
describes the quantitative and qualitative results of a study of forensic science
students regarding the forensic-related television programs they watch, such as
CSI, Bones and Dexter. We asked students to share their impressions of the
accuracy, ethics, professionalism and role models in the programs. The results
show that forensic science students are almost universally disparaging about the
realism of these programs and have mixed impressions of how the programs
portray forensic science professionalism and ethics. Most students believed that
the programs gave an unrealistic representation of the profession to the public;
yet students were also able to identify positive elements for recruitment and
education purposes.

Introduction
Popular media have suggested that crime science television programs such as CSI
may influence how lay jurors consider forensic evidence during criminal trials1–8.
This influence has been described as the CSI effect and named after the popular
television drama. It is suggested that jurors confuse the capacity of forensic evidence
with the fictional idealisation of forensic evidence as portrayed on the television
program2. Goodman-Delahunty and Verbrugge4 suggest that, despite the popular
media claims, there is little objective evidence to support the notion that crime scene
dramas such as CSI have a negative impact on jury verdicts. Wise5 indicated that
there are two issues relating to the ‘CSI effect’ proposition, with each affecting either
the prosecution or defence position; (i) the jurors held an inflated value of the
forensic evidence producing guilty verdicts2–5,9, or (ii) in the absence of forensic
evidence or when the evidence failed to reach the juries’ idealised expectations the
juries would acquit2–3,5. Evidence of the influence of the CSI effect, as claimed in the
popular media, has been mixed1–9.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
