We use the zero conditional to talk about
general truths.
Condition: if + Present simple
Result: Present simple
It is possible to use when instead of if without
any change in the meaning.
3. EXAMPLES OF ZERO CONDITIONAL
If you practise a sport, you keep fit
If you don’t smoke , your lungs are healthier
Do you feel better if you take this vitamim?
5. FIRST CONDITIONAL
We use the first conditional to talk about what
will or won’t happen given a specific
condition.
Condition: if + Present Simple
Result: will + base form of the verb
6. EXAMPLES
We will swim faster if we use a better
swimsuit.
If you don’t practise, you will lose
Will he feel down if he doesn’t win a medal?
8. SECOND CONDITIONAL
We use the second conditional to talk about
hypothetical or imaginary situations. It is also
used to give advice.
Condition: if + Pat Simple
Result: would (‘d) + base form of the verb
9. EXAMPLES
If you walked barefoot, you’d have more
muscle strength.
If you went to bed early, you wouldn’t feel
tired
Would you start a business if you didn’t have
money?
11. THIRD CONDITONAL
We use the third conditional to talk about
conditions that can no longer be
fulfilled, since they refer to the past. We often
use it to show that we are sorry about
something.
Condition: if + Past Perfect Simple
Result: would have + past participle of the
verb

If Jim had played better, he would have won
the championship.
If I had trained harder, I wouldn’t have lost he
race
Would you have chosen the players more
carefully if you had taken your time?
