The American Civil War was fought between the northern and southern states from 1861 to 1865 over the issues of slavery and states' rights. The northern Union opposed the expansion of slavery and wanted to keep new western states non-slaveholding, while the southern Confederate states viewed slavery as an integral economic and social institution. After four years of bloody combat and over 600,000 casualties, the Union emerged victorious and slavery was abolished.
