The Circus Maximus was an ancient stadium in Rome used for chariot races and other events. It was originally built in the 1st century BC by Emperor Lucius Tarquinius Priscus and later expanded by Julius Caesar to hold up to 250,000 people, making it larger than modern Europe's largest stadium. Chariot races involved teams of two or four horses competing around the track while spectators watched from the stands.
