Importance of Computer Literacy for Students
1. The Causes And Effects Of Computer Literacy
As someone with extensive computer literacy, I understand the importance of being able to be efficient with the use of computers. Whether it is at
school, or at the workplace, the struggles and inefficiency I see people have with computers results in a lot of wasted time and effort. The internet, and
computers, play such a giant role in the day–to–day life of human beings that if computers were all wiped out tomorrow, humans would have a very
difficult time in adapting to life afterwards. Individuals that do not have the proper computer literacy in 2017 will be at a significant disadvantage
among those who are computer literate. In this essay, I will highlight some of the causes of computer illiteracy and how it effects people's lives....show

Be that as it may, someone will have to be going through some rough times to not be able to afford a computer and internet service but it does not mean
that there aren't people out there living with this reality. Not being able to find a job to help pay for it, or not being able to attend a college to
better the situation are some of the possible consequences of being computer illiterate in 2017. Having flexibility with time is beneficial for someone
with financial struggles when he or she is trying to balance work life with school life. Consequently, not having good computer skills will restrict the
student from taking online classes that will allow flexibility with his or her work schedule. With 3 children, I find this to be a great benefit and plan

There are people out there that just are not attracted to using computers and other types of technology. These people typically enjoy being outside, and

and hammers aren't plugged into keyboards either. A part of me envies their ability to stay away from technology, because it does consume such a big
part of people's lives that it is hurting the connection humans have with each other. The consequences are that if they ever wanted to go back to school

Importance of Computer Literacy
Computer literacy is having up to date knowledge of computers and their capabilities. One of the more popular aspects of the computer is the use of the
internet. The internet is a worldwide collection of networks that links millions of businesses, government agencies, educational institutions, and
individuals. It was originally started by the Pentagon for scientists and military to put information and their studies on a network that was easily shared
with one another. They also designed it so it could function even when part of the network is disabled by a terrorist attack or natural disaster. The
servers allow connection between other computers by linking it to its network, to allow clients to communicate....show more content...
The completion and understanding of the information processing life cycle of computers allows users to access so much more information than
previous generations. Just owning a computer is still limiting its capabilities if you are not using the internet though.
In Bill Gates' The Road Ahead, he discusses how the internet is an "information highway" and that there is lots of materials out there, but you use
filters to help you find what you need. The internet is like also like a highway because the information that you request passes through many
networks until it reaches you. First, the computer initiates a request of data specific to the IP (internet protocol) address currently in use, then
transfers that request through the modem to the central cable system, that proceeds to an even larger central cable system. The ISP routes your
request to the appropriate destination server. Finally, the server receives your request and responds. This all happens within a few seconds
depending on how fast your internet is. In order to use the internet you will need a web browser. A web browser is application software that
connects mobile devices or computers to the internet. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari, and Google Chrome are some the most popular web
browsers. Once the web browser is set up, you are able to set a home page, or the website that will appear every time you open your browser. It is most

Those were my first words. The task of creating a program which simply prints out "Hello World" is, by tradition, the first one given to any new
programmer. It's a rite of passage. The one seen above is written in Java (a name you might recognize from those update notifications that never seem
to leave you alone). This little five line program has been written millions of times by those learning to be literate with computers.
Computer literacy has played an extremely significant role in defining who I am today, in a more unique and personal way than any traditional spoken
language, and is set to define my future as well. My ability to understand and communicate with computers is something I pride myself in greatly, and

Arlington High School is truly lucky to have Mr. Sheldon, a former valedictorian at MIT, teaching computer science. His class was revelatory for me
in my freshman year. The course was centered around learning to code in Processing through small projects. Under his guidance, I was able to make
dinky little games using the most basic programming techniques. I distinctly remember my sense of accomplishment upon turning in a barely playable
knockoff of Line Runner for my first independent project of the year. Now, looking back on this code gives me anxiety. It was nothing more than a
bunch of redundant global variables and if–statements – blasphemous! However, my programming practices did improve slightly over the year; I was
making eventually using arrays and loops to streamline my programs. Code is truly like a language – one can see the progress of their computer
literacy in the quality of the code they write. The drive to learn programming which begun in this class has led me to spend considerable amount of
my free time furthering my literacy. I've since dabbled in many different programming languages on my own time, such as HTML to make websites
and C# in Unity to make video games. Now, my code is a chocolatey combination of classes and abstraction which I can be truly proud

The analysis of the scientific literature has proved that the impact of besides the analysed non–cognitive personality traits on computer literacy level
has not been sufficiently studied. No research has been aimed at answering the question whether significant identification of statistical types in the
student's population is based on differences in computer literacy and other important variables. Mainly this article deals with the scientific problem

7. Technology is changing the world around us. When today's children begin to enter the workforce, they will be expected to be extremely computer
literate. To get students where they need to be by the time they graduate high school, computer literacy must begin in the early years of elementary
education. Why should teachers be concerned? Donald Leu, Jr., (2008) tells us that the nature ofliteracy and learning is begin redefined by digital
technologies such as the World Wide Web (WWW), e
–mail, digitized works of children's literature, and electronic chat rooms. Labbo and Reinking
(1999) suggest that e–mail promotes opportunities for reading and writing for purposes that have personal meaning as well as for encouraging more
collaborative projects and interchanges among students. Bringing the WWW into classrooms encourages teachers and students to move away from
limiting reading and discussion to the content of a textbook and provides opportunities to more critically consider the sources of information. Mark
Warschauer (2007) says the rapid diffusion of new technologies will greatly impact the nature of learning and literacy. He refers to the invention of the
printing press, which transformed literacy in the second half of the last millennium. He and others believe that digital technology will, in the long run,
have as much impact on learning and literacy as did the printing press (Warschauer 2007). How teachers respond to and use these new developments
will determine how

8. Computer Literacy And The Technology Essay
As the world changes to become a global village thorough technological innovations, computer literacy gets considered as a very important skill to
possess. This is fueled by the fact that nearly every company has become more dependent on computers and other technology to boost its business
efficiency. Computer literacy is thus an important for one to understand how computers work and operate and is defined as the knowledge and
capability to use computers as well as other related technology in an efficient manner. It entails the familiarity to computers and the skill of their use.
Most people around the world have access to computers and other devices that can connect to the internet. It is through these gadgets that people can
connect with each other, share stories and photos, interact with clients and fellow company staff using the social networks. Therefore, social network
sites provide crucial computer literacy activity, as more people who use the internet learn to negotiate interfaces, personal data and user agreements. By
looking at the technological and social factors that influence computer literacy practices in online networks would provide a basis for understanding
the impact such sites have on people and businesses. Social network sites are the web–based services allowing people to articulate other users with a
mutual connection, create a profile within a bounded system as well as view and navigate the conversations made by other users of the network system.

12. Importance Of Technology Literacy
In today's world, we live in an era where technology is becoming more and more essential in every workplace and school. Technology literacy plays an
importance in students learning because it allows them to work independently, collaborate in groups, build effective technology skills, and learn how to
communicate, interpret and share information, data and ideas (Maryland TeacherTechnology Standards, n.d).
Since it is important for all students to be technologically literate, the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), has developed technology
literacy standards that identify with what students should be able to master before graduating middle school. Primarily these standards emphasize the
importance of students learning how technology is connected to them and their communities. As well as how they can learn and collaborate with
others using technology, how they can express their ideas and share their thoughts and creativity, how to use technology for research and how to use
technology for problem–solving and making informed decisions (Maryland Teacher Technology Standards).
To make sure that students are meeting each standard, it is crucial for educators to strategically plan lessons that address the standards and engage
students with the appropriate content, technology tools, and projects that help build their technology literacy skills.

13. What Does It Mean Be Computer Literate? Essay
What does it mean to be computer literate? Computer literacy is a person's ability to use computers and similar forms of technology effectively.
This ability can range from understanding basic use to more advanced abilities such as computer programing. It can also be seen as how
comfortable a person is with using computer programs or other applications that involve computers. It is understanding how computers work,
knowing their limitations and knowing how to use them properly. Some examples of computer literacy are knowing how to avoid becoming a
victim to hackers and viruses. Knowing how to keep your personal information safe from identity theft. Being able to diagnose and properly fix
any software or hardware problems your computer might have. It also includes understanding how to find information online effectively. How
can becoming computer literate help you in a career? Computer literacy can help you in a career because it is a tool that helps you to work more
quickly and effectively. Most career settings are technology based and use some form of a computer device. Knowing how to operate these devices
can help to make doing your work tasks faster because they can perform at a quicker pace then if you were to manually do the task. An example of
this is how most retail stores use POS systems to checkout customers. These POS systems scan, ring and total the prices of items faster and more
efficiently than a person using a pen and paper to calculate the cost of a

15. 1. Explain computer literacy.
Computer literacy is the level of proficiency and fluency someone possesses amid computers. Nevertheless, computer literacy commonly implies to the
capability to manipulate applications rather than to program. Entities who are vastly computer literate are from time to time identified as power users (
Computer Literacy , n.d.). Computers have affected each of our lives: the manner by how we work, the manner of how we learn, the manner in which
we live, yet even the means we play. It virtually is unfeasible to progress complete a single day without coming upon a computer, an apparatus reliant
on a computer, information created by a computer, or a word that was established or whose implication has transformed with the introduction of
computers. However, because of the importance of computers in today's world, it is essential to be computer literate.

18. The Importance Of Computer Literacy
By definition, computer literacy is "basic, nontechnical knowledge about computers and how to use them; familiarity and experience with computers,
software, and computer systems." ("Computer literacy | Define Computer literacy at Dictionary.com," n.d.) Computer literacy is when an individual is
familiar enough with a computer to be able to use it without help or needing extensive knowledge. Someone who is computer literate is able to use a
computer, navigate folders and sub folders, run programs, install and uninstall computer software, and general knowledge of how it operates.
Computer algorithms and its significance
Computer algorithms are significant in that without them, a computer would not function. A computer algorithm is a set of instructions which tells the
computer how to do something, and in return, we are given an output of some sort. A computer algorithm can be defined as "a procedure for solving a
mathematical problem (as of finding the greatest common divisor) in a finite number of steps that frequently involves repetition of an operation;
broadly". ("Algorithm | Definition of Algorithm by Merriam–Webster," n.d.) Essentially, an algorithm is a set of instructions which are laid out step by
step, in order for the computer to process the information and preform a task.

As a means to analyze computer literacy by age, a population of children, teenagers, young adults, middle–aged adults, and senior citizens were selected
to participate in a simple computer literacy evaluation. Using only a standard laptop computer with the latest Windows operating system, participants
were evaluated on their ability to perform various file management, networking, and printing tasks. Children, ages 9–12, scored 53%; teenagers, ages
13–17, scored 64%; young adults, ages 18–25, scored 92%; middle–aged adults, ages 30–50, scored 64%; and senior citizens, 60 years or older in age,
scored 25% respectively. Overall, the evaluated population received a computer literacy rate of 59%. Refer to Figure 7 for a simplified model of the
results.
Based on age category, the young adult population led in performance, and the senior citizen population fell unfavorably short in performance. The

Many educational institutions are attempting to meet the challenge of educating people about basic computing skills (Parry). For example, providing
opportunities for students to take classes in high school allows students to become more familiar with the basics of computers earlier. Some classes
include word processing, browsing the internet, and using the computers interface. Colleges teach more advanced classes on computers. The colleges
have realized the need for students to know how to use a computer. For example, some colleges make taking at least one computer class a requirement
to graduate. These requirements help people be accountable for having some knowledge with computers no matter what their career direction is. In
case of a job change or different choice of occupation, an individual would still have a working knowledge of computers.
Just as people change careers, the way computers look and run also changes. The people who use the computers need to make sure and pay attention
to when changes are set in place. There are many books that are available that have a wide variety of topics on computers. Some community colleges
offer short classes that help develop skills with computers. An example of change is the operating system Windows created by Microsoft. There are
many different versions of windows. The version changes ever few year and with the different version comes a new look and many new features.
