Health Status of Rural Women in Odisha
In demographic point of view, women constitute little less than half of the world’s total population. However, they do not enjoy socioeconomic and health status as par with the men meaning that women are adversely placed as compared to the men. Among states of India, Odisha is a major state in Eastern India with poor socioeconomic development. Health status is also found to be poor. In all the situations, women suffer more than the men. The disease burden is high among women and Pregnancy and child birth related diseases account for about 65 of the disease. Hence, the study of health condition of rural women in Odisha is most important. In this paper, an attempt has been made to study the levels of health status of women in rural Odisha based on select indicators of health such as acute illness, chronic illness, abortions between 15 to 49 age group , mortality, disability, BMI, anemia. Hi! I gave this presentation back in Fall 2013, to an audience of people who were actually there while I was there. It was nuts. My intention with that presentation was to have these slides up in the background while I gave further details on whatever particular slide we were on, using my mouth box supplemented/augmented/enhanced/more business lingo'd with/by index cards, brain memory, body motion and physical presence, pictures lovingly hand-crafted right there on the spot, and more things of that nature. So, in the presentation's current format on this website, some slides on their own might not be quite as enlightening or useful without at least some person there to yap about things or make hand signals or draw pictures to explain what a slide was intended to represent. I also believe that I want to update this presentation a bit further now, given that I have even more impressive knowledges stored into my stupid, ugly head than I did way back then. Maternal Health Care Services and Its Utilization in Bihar, India
This document analyzes the utilization of maternal health care services and its determinants in Bihar, India using data from the District Level Household and Facility Survey (DLHS-III) 2007-08. It finds that utilization of services like antenatal care, institutional delivery, and postnatal care is significantly lower in rural areas compared to urban areas of Bihar. Home delivery was found to be more common in rural (74.1%) than urban (46%) areas, while most deliveries were normal in both settings. Measuring Poverty through Child Malnutrition A Study With Special Referance T...
This study examines child malnutrition in Arumbavur Village, Perambalur District, India. It finds that 81.74% of children in the village are malnourished based on body mass index (BMI) measurements, which is higher than the national average of 43%. Through interviews with 115 households, it identifies several socioeconomic factors contributing to malnutrition, including low family incomes below the national average, lack of sanitation facilities, and limited access to nutritious foods. While most children are breastfed, the average duration is only 6.7 months. The study concludes that despite families' efforts to provide nutrition, children in the village remain underweight and stunted due to their socioeconomic conditions.

Introduction
In the Module we will explore maternal health paying particular attention to global disparities in the support and care mothers around the world get, the factors that promote such disparities, causes of maternal mortality and morbidity, the impact of reproductive patterns on the health of children, and mechanisms to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality, particularly in low-and –middle income countries.
At the end of this Module you should be able to articulate the following:
Critical Skills
1. Explain the global trends in maternal health.
2. Identify the key players and they play in promoting maternal health.
3. Be able to identify the causes of maternal mortality and morbidity in the U.S and other countries, particularly developing nations.
4. Explain mechanisms used to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality.
5. Be familiar with at least two development organizations/NGOs and their work around maternal health.
Maternal Health at a Glance
Maternal health refers to the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. While most women look forward to motherhood (and their spouses to fatherhood), for too many women, motherhood is a torturous experience associated with suffering, ill-health and even death. It is estimated that about 800 women die from pregnancy- or childbirth-related complications around the world every day. Consider the following few facts about maternal health (WHO):
· Every day, approximately 800 women die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth – about 287 000 women in 2010 alone. Most of them died due to preventable cause like not being able to access skilled routine and emergency care.
· The FOUR main maternal mortality causes are: severe bleeding, infections, unsafe abortion, and hypertensive disorders (pre-eclampsia and eclampsia). After delivery bleeding is very serious condition, if unattended, it can kill even a healthy woman within two hours.
· Of the more than 136 million women who give birth a year, about 20 million of them experience pregnancy-related illness after childbirth.
· About 16 million girls aged between 15 and 19 give birth each year, accounting for more than 10% of all births. Complications from pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death among girls 15-19 in developing nations.
· The state of maternal health mirrors the gap between the rich and the poor. Less than 1% of maternal deaths occur in high-income countries. The lifetime risk of dying from complications in childbirth or pregnancy for a woman in the developing world is an average of one in 150 compared to one in 3800 in developed countries. Of the 800 women who die every day,440 live in sub-Saharan Africa, 230 in Southern Asia and five in high-income countries.

he reduction in deaths during pregnancy and
delivery has long been held out as a major
international public health goal, but many
countries have had difficulties making prog-
ress toward it. Most observers now agree that there are
no quick fixes, and that the solution will come with the
strengthening of now-failing health systems in many
poor countries, building up the training of professional
and paraprofessional health workers, improving access
to both basic and higher-level services, and ensuring the
availability of basic medical supplies and medications to
deal with obstetric problems. The case of Sri Lanka dem-
onstrates how rapidly progress can occur when those
fundamental building blocks are in place.
Mothers Shouldn’t Die in Childbirth
Pregnancy and childbirth are natural events and typi-
cally require little or no medical intervention for either
mother or baby. But in about 15 percent of all preg-
nancies, a severe complication affects the woman—for
example, maternal diabetes or dangerously high blood
pressure sets in, excessive bleeding occurs during child-
birth, or the mother suffers from a serious postpartum

While women do most of the work in production, they have less role in marketing and consumption, getting smaller shares of food. A STUDY ON THE PRACTICE OF LACTATING MOTHERS IN THANJAVUR DISTRICT
This document summarizes a study on breastfeeding practices of lactating mothers in Thanjavur District, India. The study aimed to understand breastfeeding cultural practices and the association between breastfeeding practices and socioeconomic factors. 50 mothers were surveyed using interviews. Key findings include that most mothers were below age 27, Hindu, and from backward castes. The majority (66%) breastfed exclusively while others supplemented with formula or solids. Most deliveries were in hospitals. Knowledge of optimal breastfeeding and complementary feeding was low. The study concluded breastfeeding practices in rural areas were better but nutritional education programs are still needed to address issues like malnutrition and obesity.

Introduction
In the Module we will explore maternal health paying particular attention to global disparities in the support and care mothers around the world get, the factors that promote such disparities, causes of maternal mortality and morbidity, the impact of reproductive patterns on the health of children, and mechanisms to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality, particularly in low-and –middle income countries.
At the end of this Module you should be able to articulate the following:

2. Identify the key players and they play in promoting maternal health.
3. Be able to identify the causes of maternal mortality and morbidity in the U.S and other countries, particularly developing nations.
4. Explain mechanisms used to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality.
5. Be familiar with at least two development organizations/NGOs and their work around maternal health.
Maternal Health at a Glance
Maternal health refers to the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. While most women look forward to motherhood (and their spouses to fatherhood), for too many women, motherhood is a torturous experience associated with suffering, ill-health and even death. It is estimated that about 800 women die from pregnancy- or childbirth-related complications around the world every day. Consider the following few facts about maternal health (WHO):
· Every day, approximately 800 women die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth – about 287 000 women in 2010 alone. Most of them died due to preventable cause like not being able to access skilled routine and emergency care.
· The FOUR main maternal mortality causes are: severe bleeding, infections, unsafe abortion, and hypertensive disorders (pre-eclampsia and eclampsia). After delivery bleeding is very serious condition, if unattended, it can kill even a healthy woman within two hours.
· Of the more than 136 million women who give birth a year, about 20 million of them experience pregnancy-related illness after childbirth.
· About 16 million girls aged between 15 and 19 give birth each year, accounting for more than 10% of all births. Complications from pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death among girls 15-19 in developing nations.
· The state of maternal health mirrors the gap between the rich and the poor. Less than 1% of maternal deaths occur in high-income countries. The lifetime risk of dying from complications in childbirth or pregnancy for a woman in the developing world is an average of one in 150 compared to one in 3800 in developed countries. Of the 800 women who die every day,440 live in sub-Saharan Africa, 230 in Southern Asia and five in high-income countries.

he reduction in deaths during pregnancy and
delivery has long been held out as a major
international public health goal, but many
countries have had difficulties making prog-
ress toward it. Most observers now agree that there are
no quick fixes, and that the solution will come with the
strengthening of now-failing health systems in many
poor countries, building up the training of professional
and paraprofessional health workers, improving access
to both basic and higher-level services, and ensuring the
availability of basic medical supplies and medications to

A STUDY ON THE PRACTICE OF LACTATING MOTHERS IN THANJAVUR DISTRICT
This document summarizes a study on breastfeeding practices of lactating mothers in Thanjavur District, India. The study aimed to understand breastfeeding cultural practices and the association between breastfeeding practices and socioeconomic factors. 50 mothers were surveyed using interviews. Key findings include that most mothers were below age 27, Hindu, and from backward castes. The majority (66%) breastfed exclusively while others supplemented with formula or solids. Most deliveries were in hospitals. Knowledge of optimal breastfeeding and complementary feeding was low. The study concluded breastfeeding practices in rural areas were better but nutritional education programs are still needed to address issues like malnutrition and obesity.

Odisha has made progress in reducing mortality and improving nutrition outcomes through scaling up key health and nutrition interventions. A timeline analysis found coverage of interventions like antenatal care, institutional delivery, immunization, and ICDS supplementary nutrition increased from the 1990s onwards. 1) The Transfer Modality Research Initiative (TMRI) in Bangladesh evaluated the impacts of different social protection interventions on household welfare and child nutrition.
2) The study found that cash transfers, food transfers, and combinations of the two all improved household consumption and food security. However, adding nutrition behavior change communication (BCC) led to significantly larger improvements.
3) In northern Bangladesh, cash transfers combined with BCC reduced child stunting rates by 7.3 percentage points over two years, suggesting social protection needs to address both income and nutrition knowledge to impact child nutrition outcomes.

This document summarizes the results of a study on the social return on investment (SROI) of a nutrition intervention program in urban poor settings in Nairobi, Kenya.
