An economy is an area of the production,
distribution and trade, as well as consumption
of goods and services by different agents.
Economics is important for many areas of
society. It can help improve living standards
and make society a better place. Economics is
like science in that it can be used to improve
living standards and also to make things
worse.
Economic
growth

broad process of growth, progress and
change that is deliberate by residents of
the area to be developed, organizations
and governments. Women literacy rate

Role of women in Pakistan’s economy
Background :
◦ In the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, women were only viewed as mothers
and housewives, within development policies and programs .
◦ Their economic activities and contributions were ignored and not
valued.
◦ Development theorists and planners saw men as the agents and
actors of development.
◦ Men were seen to be the breadwinners of their families. Women
were in visible. Women were an under-utilized resource for
development.

Working women in
Pakistan
◦ Women in Pakistan have progressed in
various fields of life such as politics,
education , economy, services, health
and many more.
◦ 25% of Pakistani women were
"economically active"(either employed, or
unemployed but available to furnish
labor).
◦ In NWFP (89.54%) and Sindh (74,36%).
Punjab shows an almost equal division
between full-time workers (55.6%) and
part-time workers, while in Baluchistan
82.84 percent of female family workers
are part-time 9

Employment
◦ Pakistan is a largely rural society (almost two-thirds of the
population lives in rural areas) and women are rarely formally
employed.
◦ This does not mean that women do not participate in the
economy: quite on the contrary, women usually work on the
farm of the household, practice subsistence agriculture, or
otherwise work within the household economic unit .
◦ However, women are often prevented from advancing
economically, due to social restrictions on women's movement
and gender mixing, as well as due to low education.

12
Work force participation
◦ Although women play an active role in Pakistan's economy, their
contribution has been grossly underreported in some censuses and
surveys.
◦ Part of the underestimation of women's economic role is that Pakistan,
like many other countries, has a very large informal sector.
◦ The 1991–92 Labor Force Survey revealed that only about 16% of women
aged 10 years and over were in the labor force.
◦ According to World Bank, in 2014, women made up 22.3% of the labor
force in Pakistan.
13
According to the 1999 report by the Human
Rights Commission of Pakistan, only two
percent of Pakistani women participate in the
formal sector of employment. However, the 1980
agricultural census stated that the women's
participation rate in agriculture was 73%. The
1990–1991 Pakistan Integrated Household Survey
indicated that the female labor force
participation rate was 45% in rural areas and
17% the urban areas . Pakistani women play a
major role in agricultural production, livestock
raising and cottage industries.
14
In 2008, it was recorded that 21.8 percent of
females were participating in the labor force in
Pakistan while 82.7 percent of men were
involved in labor. The rate of women in the labor
force has an annual growth rate of 6.5 percent.
Out of the 47 million employed peoples in
Pakistan in 2008, only 9 million were women
and of those 9 million, 70 percent worked in the
agricultural sector. The income of Pakistani
women in the labor force is generally lower than
that of men, due in part to a lack of formal
education. The low female literacy rate is a large
obstacle in women taking part in the workforce.

Role of rural
women
◦ Rural -women are major contributors in four
sub-sectors of the rural economy, crop
production , livestock production, cottage
industry, household and family
maintenance activities, such as transporting
water, fuel and fodder to and from the
home, food preparation and preservation
and caring for children,
◦ The elderly and the disabled women make
up 76 percent of all part-time workers and
only 25 percent of those acknowledged as
full-time workers.
17
ROLE OF urban
women
◦ In urban areas, females find their way to
schools, colleges, universities or
scholarships abroad .
◦ Other than the medicine, which was once
considered to be the only profession which
women joined, Now even the most
technical spheres like engineering,
architecture, communications and IT.
◦ Women can now be seen encouraging
cricket teams and participating all kinds of
sports from cricket to athletics and even
marathon recently held in Lahore.
18
Role of women in Pakistan’s economy
◦ Today, women in Pakistan hold high ranking positions as
the CEOs and executives. Recently the president has
appointed Dr.Shamshad Akhtar as the first female governor
of the State Bank of Pakistan. Two lady doctors of the
Pakistan Army have also risen to the rank of major general .
The female doctors joined hands with the male doctors in
the most inaccessible earth quake hitareas in the northern
part of Pakistan to treat the sick and wounded.

growth
◦ In medical field women are working
well as compared to males , Women
works as a gynecologist preventing
lives of thousands of women and with
their proper cure preventing them from
fatal disease.
◦ In surgery they also perform a notable
contribution.

• Women now a days is also playing an
important role in scientific developments
and discourse, however, this role has

recognition and coverage as compared to
their male counterparts.

Industrial revolution:
◦ From the beginning of the Industrial
Revolution, we know that women invented
and improved machinery and industrial
designs.
◦ One of our country’s earliest successful
industries the straw bonnet business was
built on several related inventions, all by
women. It began in 1798, with Betsey Met
calf's development of an improved method
of braiding straw to make straw bonnets.
Her invention formed the basis of a
flourishing cottage industry.
◦ Mary Dixon Kies helped the industry expand in
1809 by developing a process for weaving the
straw for bonnets.
27
◦ EXAMPLE :
◦ 1835 Power Loom Weaving
was a common occupation
amongst women during the
Industrial Revolution. This
image is an example of an
average cotton factory at this
time;
◦ According to a recent report released by
the International Monetary Fund (IMF),
Pakistan’s GDP can increase by up to 30
percent if women are more empowered
and play their role in the labor force.
◦ Unfortunately, the employment rate for
women is at its lowest in Pakistan (4.3
percent) and is even lower when it comes
to industries.
◦ It has been witnessed that almost all
factories work in three shifts and hire male
workers.
