This document summarizes the findings of an IDC study on large enterprises that deployed IBM Power Systems servers to consolidate workloads. The study found that these organizations achieved significant cost savings and efficiency gains through consolidation. Key results included reducing system downtime by 60-94%, lowering IT staff maintenance time by up to 50%, and saving over $235,000 annually per 1,000 users on average. Consolidating workloads onto these highly virtualized servers also reduced power and cooling costs substantially. The document concludes that these benefits will be amplified by new Power7-based servers that provide faster performance and greater energy efficiency.
This white paper discusses Sun Microsystems' new virtualized network express module and blade server solution. It addresses ongoing customer needs to reduce datacenter costs related to power, cooling, management complexity and staffing. The solution aims to improve efficiency and lower costs by streamlining management, reducing cabling, improving energy efficiency, and providing a single-pane-of-glass management view.
"Enterprise applications support the daily operations of a business, which means that
they are vital to its ability to generate revenue and profit growth — and to account for
it. Whether those applications support a supply chain, general accounting, personnel
management, or customer relationship management, they must be available to end
users and must be accessible enough to create ""snapshots"" of the business on a
daily, hourly, or, in some cases, near-real-time basis."
Many customers have deployed end-to-end workloads that span their enterprise or midsize organization. Multitier computing has taken hold, leveraging components of end-to-end workloads that span the computing systems of many departments and divisions in large enterprises and midsize businesses. Although the applications have "grown up" on separate servers — large and small — the overall business would benefit if they could be brought closer together.
VMware Cost Savings Through Virtualizationhypknight
This document discusses how virtualization with VMware can help organizations reduce IT costs and improve efficiency during an economic downtime. It outlines the challenges facing CIOs with decreasing budgets while still needing to do more. Survey results are presented showing virtualization is a top priority and VMware is gaining share of IT spending. The document then provides examples of how VMware has helped customers consolidate servers, reduce data center costs, improve operational efficiency through features like automated patching and migration. It estimates the tangible savings customers have achieved in areas like infrastructure, support staff, energy usage and avoided downtime through high availability and disaster recovery. Overall it aims to demonstrate how VMware delivers the highest ROI and lowest TCO among virtualization solutions.
An Architecture for Modular Data Centersguest640c7d
This document proposes a new architecture for modular data centers using standard shipping containers. The key points are:
1) Shipping containers can house thousands of commodity server components and be delivered as fully operational modules, eliminating the need for on-site assembly and maintenance.
2) These container modules reduce costs associated with component shipping, installation, power/cooling infrastructure, and hardware administration over the lifetime of the systems.
3) The modular approach provides flexibility to rapidly deploy new capacity globally and to later relocate data centers cost-effectively if needed.
This short paper discusses technical and financial advantages of server virtualization. The concepts in the paper are illustrated by two case studies which analyze the net present value of virtualization projects based on potential power savings.

This document proposes a new architecture for modular data centers using standard shipping containers. It argues that fully populating shipping containers with thousands of commodity servers and delivering them as ready-to-run modules could significantly reduce data center costs through lower acquisition, deployment, and management costs compared to individual servers. This approach aims to address challenges from the rapid growth of internet services relying on large numbers of inexpensive, commodity servers in data centers.

The Cost Of Retaining Aging It InfrastructureJosh Castellano
The document summarizes a white paper about the rising costs of maintaining aging IT infrastructure and the benefits of upgrading to newer servers. It finds that maintenance costs rise significantly for servers older than 3-4 years as failure rates increase. Upgrading to HP ProLiant Gen8 servers can provide significant cost savings from reduced maintenance and support costs compared to continuing to operate aging servers. The new servers address many causes of downtime through automated management capabilities that help reduce IT workload and costs.
Many IT organizations have more servers than needed, leading to high costs. Server virtualization allows multiple virtual servers to run on single physical servers, reducing costs and increasing flexibility. However, traditional system management tools may not account for this dynamic virtual environment. IT organizations must adapt tools and processes to fully benefit from virtualization.
The document discusses consolidating IBM Lotus Domino workloads from multiple x86 servers onto fewer IBM Power Systems servers. This can provide significant cost savings through reduced hardware, energy, floor space, software licensing and staffing costs. Specifically, consolidating 41 HP ProLiant servers running 164 cores at 17% utilization onto a single Power 750 server utilizing 57% of its cores can save over $995k in total cost of ownership over three years. Upgrading to Lotus Domino 8.5 can also reduce storage requirements by up to 50%. The document recommends a Power 750 Express server as a solution, highlighting its POWER7 processor performance, scalability, virtualization and energy efficiency capabilities.

Server virtualization upends this serial relationship. With server virtualization, a
hypervisor dynamically creates multiple, isolated software instances, or virtual machines

share the server's resources. By interleaving the ebb and flow of multiple workloads,
server utilization rates can be dramatically and permanently improved. In addition, server
sprawl can, for a period of time, be reversed.

Introduction to Mahout and Machine LearningVarad Meru
This presentation gives an introduction to Apache Mahout and Machine Learning. It presents some of the important Machine Learning algorithms implemented in Mahout. Machine Learning is a vast subject; this presentation is only a introductory guide to Mahout and does not go into lower-level implementation details.
This report deals with this cost/benefit equation. Specifically, it compares the IBM i 7.1 operating system deployed on Power Systems with two alternatives: use of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008, and use of x86 Linux with Oracle Database 11g, both deployed on Intel-based servers.
Virtualization has become mainstream, with over 50% of server workloads now running on virtual machines. This has driven demand for servers with larger memory capacities that can support higher VM densities. While virtualization helped address issues like server sprawl and underutilization, the need for more memory per VM is now a key limitation for increasing consolidation. New servers with massive memory capacity are aiming to maximize the number of VMs per physical server and lower costs per application.
Modular blade server architectures address many challenges facing modern data centers by consolidating computing components into smaller, modular form factors that share resources to lower costs and complexity. Blades can satisfy computing needs for servers, desktops, networking and storage. They provide world-class solutions by delivering high performance, reliability, efficiency and scalability without disruption. Proper planning is required, but blade servers are highly efficient platforms for consolidating distributed servers into a common data center through their small size and ability to maximize resource utilization through virtualization.
Idc White Paper For Ibm On Virtualization Srvcslambertt
The document discusses IBM's virtualization services. It begins by providing background on how virtualization can help enterprises reduce IT costs through server consolidation and improved hardware utilization. It then discusses IBM's approach to virtualization services, which includes planning, implementation, ongoing support, and consulting services to help clients develop virtualization strategies and optimize their IT environments. IBM views virtualization as part of an overall IT strategy and offers a portfolio of services addressing various aspects of virtualization.
Msft Top10 Business Practicesfor Es Data Centers April09hutuworm
Microsoft outlines its top 10 business practices for environmentally sustainable data centers. These practices include providing incentives for improving efficiency metrics like PUE; focusing on effective utilization of resources rather than just capacity; using virtualization to improve server utilization; driving quality through compliance with standards; embracing change management processes; understanding application workloads; right-sizing server platforms; testing servers' performance and energy efficiency; converging on a small number of standard server models; and fostering innovation through competitive bids from manufacturers. Implementing these practices can help reduce energy use, waste, and costs while increasing efficiency and returns on investment.
Effective power management is quickly becoming a major concern for data centers of all sizes. Specialized power management software is now available to help meet these needs. We tested two of these power management tools, Dell OpenManage Power Center and JouleX Energy Manager for Data Centers.
Both Dell OpenManage Power Center 2.0 and JouleX Energy Manager address some of the most common critical power tasks for your data center servers. JouleX Energy Manager is a product that includes additional features, but you must pay upfront acquisition costs and incur recurring software maintenance costs for potentially less-common features that just a subset of IT departments may implement. In contrast, Dell OpenManage Power Center, when used in conjunction with iDRAC Enterprise, comes at a very compelling price point – $0.00. This translates to a great value and an immediate return on investment.
The document summarizes an IDC white paper on converged infrastructure. The key points are:
1) IT infrastructure has become highly complex over time, leading to rising management costs as organizations have had to integrate different systems. Server virtualization has helped contain hardware costs but not management overhead.
2) Converged infrastructure integrates servers, storage, networking and management tools into a single system. This simplifies deployment and lowers management costs through automation.
3) Converged systems represent the natural evolution of IT infrastructure as different technologies gradually integrate over multiple technology cycles. Convergence enables more dynamic, efficient "private cloud" environments within organizations.
Cloud computing helps start up companies get off the ground quickly without any capital investment with the ability to scale as the business grows. Established companies can cut cost with cloud computing.
- Three organizations realized benefits from using IBM PureFlex and Flex Systems as integrated platforms for cloud infrastructure, including faster deployment times of 33%, near 100% system availability, and lower operations costs of 37%.
- Capgemini deployed an IBM PureFlex system to support its SAP cloud hosting service 33% faster while improving performance 10-15% and reducing operations costs up to 30%.

Small and medium-sized businesses can reduce software licensing and other OPE...Principled Technologies
A cluster of these servers ran a mix of applications with up to 27 percent better application performance than a previous-generation cluster, which
could allow companies to do a given amount of work with fewer servers
Conclusion
As you do your best to balance timing, budget, IT resources, and your current and anticipated server needs, consider how opting for newer servers could help your business. As our testing showed, there are clear benefits to choosing servers that support such workload requirements as keeping databases running at a quick pace and delivering speedy hosting for your business’s website. Plus, a solution that offers the capacity and software features to perform well while natively supporting Kubernetes containers could add value in terms of setup, flexibility, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. And you can achieve all of this and possibly reduce OPEX in the process.
In our testing with a mixed workload that reflects some of the needs common to small and medium businesses, a cluster of 16G Dell PowerEdge R7615 single-socket servers powered by 4th Gen AMD EPYC processors outperformed a cluster of previous-generation 15G Dell PowerEdge R7515 servers, with improvements of up to 27 percent and latency reduction of up to 50 percent. These results show that upgrading to the new Dell solution can be a smart step toward meeting the needs of your users now and in the years to come.

Cloud Technology and Virtualization
There are many reasons companies and organizations are investing in server virtualization. Some of the reasons are financially motivated, while others address technical concerns. Server virtualization conserves space through consolidation. It's common practice to dedicate each server to a single application. If several applications only use a small amount of processing power, the network administrator can consolidate several machines into one server running multiple virtual environments. For companies that have hundreds or thousands of servers, the need for physical space can decrease significantly. Server virtualization provides a way for companies to practice redundancy without purchasing additional hardware. Redundancy refers to running the same application on multiple servers. It's a safety measure -- if a server fails for any reason, another server running the same application can take its place. This minimizes any interruption in service. It wouldn't make sense to build two virtual servers performing the same application on the same physical server. If the physical server were to crash, both virtual servers would also fail. In most cases, network administrators will create redundant virtual servers on different physical machines. Virtual servers offer programmers isolated, independent systems in which they can test new applications or operating systems. Rather than buying a dedicated physical machine, the network administrator can create a virtual server on an existing machine. Because each virtual server is independent in relation to all the other servers, programmers can run software without worrying about affecting other applications (Strickland 2013).
Cloud computing is ideal for small companies, as it’s cost-effective, saves time and energy, and it allows for a high level of customization. According to Forbes, a 2009 study found that cloud computing could save up to 67% of the lifecycle cost for server deployment on a large scale. Another study found that using cloud solutions generally results in higher investment returns (when compared to an on-site system). There are further cost saving benefits, such as less need for expensive hardware and software, and no need for physical networks or IT maintenance. Also, cloud systems are usually ‘pay-as-you-go’, so you only pay for what you use. There are no upfront investments, and IT requirements can be easily budgeted for. Also, various cloud services can either be added or scaled back, depending on where your business is, and how much growth is taking place. The cloud is also highly customizable: you can select what platform you want, which payroll software to use, and what email marketing tools you require – all from different vendors, and all individually configurable (K2 SEO 2013).
The c.
The document discusses how server virtualization can provide significant cost savings and operational efficiencies for organizations. It provides an example of a regional utility that virtualized 1,000 servers over 1.5 years, reducing costs by over $8 million through lower hardware, power, cooling, and real estate needs. Additional case studies show how virtualization helped a bank reduce provisioning time from weeks to hours and a community college improve disaster recovery and flexibility with limited budgets.

Webinar: Designing a schema for a Data WarehouseFederico Razzoli
Are you new to data warehouses (DWH)? Do you need to check whether your data warehouse follows the best practices for a good design? In both cases, this webinar is for you.
A data warehouse is a central relational database that contains all measurements about a business or an organisation. This data comes from a variety of heterogeneous data sources, which includes databases of any type that back the applications used by the company, data files exported by some applications, or APIs provided by internal or external services.
But designing a data warehouse correctly is a hard task, which requires gathering information about the business processes that need to be analysed in the first place. These processes must be translated into so-called star schemas, which means, denormalised databases where each table represents a dimension or facts.
We will discuss these topics:
- How to gather information about a business;
- Understanding dictionaries and how to identify business entities;
- Dimensions and facts;
- Setting a table granularity;
- Types of facts;
- Types of dimensions;
- Snowflakes and how to avoid them;
- Expanding existing dimensions and facts.

The Business Value of Large-Scale Server Consolidation
Sponsored by: IBM
Jean S. Bozman Randy Perry
August 2010
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This paper examines the results of an IDC study of enterprise organizations that have
www.idc.com
deployed IBM Power Systems to achieve workload consolidation, improved uptime, and
reduced operational costs. These systems are highly virtualized platforms that supported
consolidation of workloads and provided near-term payback from the initial investment.
The respondents to the study provided data on both the investments required —
F.508.935.4015
acquiring and deploying the Power Systems and migrating the software and
application workloads — and the business returns, including reduced IT labor,
reduced downtime, and support for increasing demand for computing.
Given budget constraints, rising energy costs, and continuing concerns about the
P.508.872.8200
economic downturn that began in fall 2008, efficiency in the datacenter is a top priority for
businesses today. To become more efficient, IT organizations have focused on workload
consolidation, reducing the number of individual servers that must be managed and
maintained. Virtualization is the key to this workload consolidation because it assigns
workloads, running on virtual servers, to physical server resources, such as processor
Global Headquarters: 5 Speen Street Framingham, MA 01701 USA
cores, memory, and I/O links. Further, virtualization isolates workloads, preventing them
from interfering with one another and avoiding downtime.
Key findings from this study of Power Systems deployed in large organizations included
system downtime reductions of 60% to 94%; reduction in IT staff time related to
maintenance of up to 50%; and an average annual savings of more than $235,000 per
1,000 users for the sites that had deployed POWER6 servers. Other sources of savings
included avoidance of frequent hardware purchases and power/cooling cost reductions.
One customer reported saving 88% in power costs, amounting to $3.5 million annually.
For large enterprises with more than 10,000 end users, the savings for these
deployments added up to millions of dollars over a three-year period, as the tables in this
document show.
These results, regarding POWER6 system deployments, will likely be amplified by the
introduction of a new generation of IBM servers that are based on POWER7
processors, which were designed to be faster — with up to four times the number of
cores per processor — and more energy efficient.
SITUATION OVERVIEW
Enterprises are being pressed to deal with continuously increasing demand for processing
applications and to work with hard limits to power, cooling, and space growth in their
datacenters. Clearly, this is not an easy time to be an IT manager or a business manager
