Louis Armstrong was an American jazz trumpeter and singer who was one of the most influential figures in jazz. He was among the first truly popular African American entertainers to "cross over" into mainstream success while still living in a racially segregated United States. Armstrong was born in 1901 in New Orleans and was known for his innovative approach to soloing that helped transform jazz from a collective ensemble sound to an art in which individual musicians could express themselves through improvisation.
