The document discusses the biblical basis for the baptism of the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues. It provides several passages from the books of John, Mark, Acts, and 1 Corinthians that describe believers receiving the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues. The key points made are that Jesus and the apostles taught that receiving the Holy Spirit would be accompanied by speaking in tongues, the biblical accounts of Pentecost and others describe this occurring, and Paul viewed speaking in tongues as a gift from God although he emphasized other gifts like prophecy. The document encourages believers to ask God for and expect to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
2. John 7:37 In the last day, that great day of the
feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man
thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture
hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of
living water.
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they
that believe on him should receive: for the Holy
Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was
not yet glorified.)
3. There are clearly two baptisms in
scripture – water and Holy Spirit
The biblical model of the baptism of
the Holy Spirit always included
speaking in tongues
4. Jesus Clearly says all believers will
speak in tongues
Mark 16:14 Later He appeared to the eleven
as they sat at the table…
15 And He said to them,“Go into all the world
and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He
who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he
who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And
these signs will follow those who believe: In My
name they will cast out demons; they will speak
with new tongues
5. Acts 1:4 And, being assembled together with
them, commanded them that they should not
depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise
of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of
me.
5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye
shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many
days hence.
6. Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that
the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall
be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in
all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the
uttermost part of the earth.
7. Acts 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was
fully come, they were all with one accord in one
place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound
from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it
filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven
tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of
them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy
Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues,
as the Spirit gave them utterance.
8. Peter preaching to house of Cornelius
Acts 10:43 To him give all the prophets
witness, that through his name whosoever
believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
44 While Peter yet spake these words, the
Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the
word.
45 And they of the circumcision which believed
were astonished, as many as came with Peter,
because that on the Gentiles also was poured
out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
9. Acts 10:46 For they heard them speak with
tongues, and magnify God.Then answered Peter,
47 Can any man forbid water, that these should
not be baptized, which have received the Holy
Ghost as well as we?
48 And he commanded them to be baptized in
the name of the Lord.
10. Paul Preaching in Ephesus
Acts19:1 And it came to pass, that, while
Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed
through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and
finding certain disciples,
2 He said unto them, Have ye received the
Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said
unto him,We have not so much as heard
whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were
ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
11. Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands
upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and
they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
12. Apostle Paul wrote 2/3 of New
Testament
- What is His opinion of tongues?
1 Cor 14:5 I wish you all spoke with tongues,
but even more that you prophesied; for he who
prophesies is greater than he who speaks with
tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the
church may receive edification.
13. 1 Cor14:13 Therefore let him who speaks in
a tongue pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I
pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my
understanding is unfruitful.
14. 1 Cor 14:15 What is the conclusion then? I will
pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the
understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I
will also sing with the understanding…
18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more
than you all; 19 yet in the church I would
rather speak five words with my understanding,
that I may teach others also, than ten thousand
words in a tongue.
15. 1 Cor 14:39 Therefore, brethren, desire
earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to
speak with tongues. 40 Let all things be done
decently and in order.
16. How To Be Baptized in the Holy Spirit
You must accept Jesus and be born again.
Ask Jesus for the baptism-If you ask you will
receive the baptism. You do not need to tarry.
17. Luke 11 If a son asks for bread from any
father among you, will he give him a stone? Or
if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent
instead of a fish?...
If you then, being evil, know how to give good
gifts to your children, how much more will your
heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those
who ask Him!”
18. Does sin stop the Holy Spirit?
- Church of Corinth was engaged in all
kinds of sinful acts
Will the Holy Spirit move my lips for
me?
- “They began to speak”
- “I will pray in the spirit”
Will I understand what I am saying?
-“Your mind is unfruitful.”
- Don’t worry about whether you feel it
19. We need to decide if we will follow doctrine or
the biblical model.
The gifts of the Holy Spirit are divine gifts
God wants to give you His power
When you pray in tongues, the power and
anointing of the Holy Spirit is flowing through
you
20. I Corinthians 11:24
“Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for
you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the
same manner He also took the cup after supper,
saying,“This cup is the new covenant in My blood.
This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance
of Me.”
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink
this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He
comes.
