1. The Trinity
All NKJV unless otherwise specified
Genesis 1 v26-27
26
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea,
over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27
So
God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Elohim – God/Deity (Plural) – Appears in Genesis 1v1 and in 2,700 other places in the Old Testament
Eloah – God/Deity (Singular)
This alludes to the Trinity, namely God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
In the Old Testament, it was primarily God the Father that was the prominent speaker, in the Gospels it was predominantly the
Son, but now it is the Holy Spirit who is the predominant speaker:
Hebrews 1 v1-3
1
God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2
has in these last days
spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; 3
who being the
brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had
by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
God the Father in the above spoke through the Son.
The Son sat down at the right hand of the Father.
John 14 v26
26
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your
remembrance all things that I said to you.
The Father sends the Holy Spirit in the name of Jesus, and the Holy Spirit will teach and remind us of all things
spoken by Jesus.
And again….
John 16 v15 (NIV)
All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.
The proof that the Holy Spirit speaks to us is shown in the below verse:
Acts 13 v2
2
As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, “Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to
which I have called them.”
John 14 v28
28
“You have heard Me say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I
said, ‘I am going to the Father,’ for My Father is greater than I.
John 16 v7
7
“Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to
you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
John 16 v13-14
13
“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own
authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14
“He will glorify Me, for He will take of
what is Mine and declare it to you.
2. Matthew 28 v19
19
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit,
There are almost countless other references to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit being 3 distinct persons in both the Old
as well as New Testament.
Many antagonists against the bible refer to the fact that the word “Trinity” is not used in the bible. Let the above
verses settle once and for all the debate about the existence of the Trinity.
The Father is God, The Son Jesus Christ is God, and the Holy Spirit is God (refer again Genesis 1v26-27).
Each person of the Godhead is God, and collectively they are God. They are One in Unity. This will be shown below.
The Three are in Unity, and inseparable in purpose
1) All of creation was made through Jesus Christ, as the verse below shows:
Hebrews 1v2 (NIV)
But in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the
universe.
2) The Holy Spirit carried out the Creation Miracle (Operative)
Genesis 1 v2-3
2
The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the
face of the waters. 3
Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
3) Jesus Baptised with the Holy Spirit
Luke 3 v21-22
21
When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was
opened. 22
And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said,
“You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”
We can see from the above, that Jesus’ ministry on earth only began once He was baptized with the Holy Spirit from
on High.
We can also see that this applies to believers, since the disciples were told not to leave Jerusalem until such time that
they were baptized with the Holy Spirit, as can be seen in the verse below.
Acts 1 v4-5
4
And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of
the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5
“for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with
the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
It is interesting to note that all of the miracles performed by Jesus in his earthly ministry was through the gifts of the
Holy Spirit. Jesus spoke healing and miracles in perfect faith, and by the power of the Holy Spirit in operation, they
were fulfilled (operative).
4) The Holy Spirit only speaks what He hears
John 16 v13 (Repeated from earlier)
13
“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own
authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
3. 5) Jesus only spoke what He heard from the Father, and upon the authority of the Father
John 7 v16-17
16
Jesus answered them and said, “My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. 17
“If anyone wants to do His will, he shall
know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority.
John 12 v49-50
49
“For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what
I should speak. 50
“And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told
Me, so I speak.”
We can see from the above that the 3 are inseparable in purpose and unity!!!
Now, for the BELIEVER
Romans 8v14
14
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
We are to be filled with the Holy Spirit, as Jesus was filled, as the disciples were filled.
We are to be led by the Holy Spirit
By this we know that we are sons of God
The Holy Spirit will lead us according to the will of God
The gifts of the Holy Spirit (healings, miracles, etc) will work through the sons of God, for the furtherance of God’s
kingdom on this earth.
Mark 16 v15-18
15
And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16
“He who believes and is baptized will
be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17
“And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they
will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18
“they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will
by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
