Nathaniel Hawthorne as a feministic writer
Nathaniel Hawthorne was deeply interested in
portraying womencharacter. It became critical argument for his work.A
quicksearch of the MLA bibliographyyields 128 entries under “Hawthorne and
Women” (not all treat fictional subjects)and another 111 on femalecharacters
in the tales and romances.
His ancestors include JohnHawthorne, the only judgeinvolvedin the Salem
Witch Trials, who never repentedof his actions. Nathaniel later addeda "w" to
make his name "Hawthorne" in order to hide this relation.
The Salemwitch trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people
accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and
May 1693. The trials resulted in the executions of twenty people, mostof them
women.
