2. PLAN:
Periods of English Enlightenment:
a. Early Enlightenment (1688-1740)
b. Mature Enlightenment (1740-1750)
c. Late Enlightenment (late 18th century)
3. The first period of Enlightenment lasted
from the glorious revolution (1668) till the
end of 1730. this period was characterized
by Classicism in poetry. The greatest
follower was Alexander Pope, Richard
Stern. The end of this period was marked
by novels of D. Defoe and Jonathan Swift.
First Period
4. This period saw a flowering of
journalism (J.Addison and R.Steele)
and
satirical genre.
Satirical poet - Alexander Pope,
imitated the style of ancient Greek
and Roman
poets:
"The Rape of the Lock"
"The Dunciad".
Early Enlightenment (1688-1740)
5. Henry Fielding was a novelist and
playwright during the English
Restoration as well as one of the
founders of London’s first police force,
the Bow Street Runners. He was born
April 22, 1707 in Somerset to Colonel
Edmund Fielding and his wife Sarah
Gould, the daughter of Judge Henry
Gould.

Richard Sheridan(1751-1816)
He developed the satirical English
drama, was known also as a
progressive social figure. Once he
made a speech in Parliament which
lasted for 6 hours. He was born in
Dublin, his father was an actor,
mother – a writer.
