Olaudah Equiano was taken into slavery at age 11 and suffered through the brutal Middle Passage while being transported on the Atlantic slave trade. He had a long life as a slave but became very interested in personal freedom and democracy due to his involvement in the anti-slavery movement. He wrote about his experiences and perspectives in "The Interesting Narrative of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, The African".
