Transdisciplinary Research - Buildings as Service-Oriented Product-Service Sy...Cyril MAUGER
This paper proposes a transdisciplinary research for the conceptual definition of a building. It is based on the concept of Service-oriented Product-Service System (PSS) applied to buildings. Existing kinds of PSS are about service(s) integration whereas Service-Oriented PSS is about product(s) integration. The product definition and design aims to be well-aligned with the services the customer wants to provide to his community and the chosen means to deliver them. The main focus is on the services and how the building could support it or contribute to its improvement. As a consequence, the building as well as the services becomes parts of a “building system” to be defined with the customer. This enlarged way of seeing a building required the use of a transdisciplinary research. It provides new perspectives of innovation in its definition and a better integration/alignment between all of its components during the design phase. It calls for more accuracy and methodology in the service definition in order to ensure this alignment.
MSc Thesis: BIM & VIRTUALITY CONTINUUM by Enrico SalcuniEnrico Salcuni
Bim and Virtuality Continuum: Applications of a Virtual Reality Prototype for the Safety Training on Construction Sites.
This thesis provides the foundation for a thorough knowledge of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and its applications on virtuality continuum. In particular, the development of an innovative prototype for virtual reality simulation, created for the safety training on construction sites, is proposed.
This report is organised in three sections. The first section outlines the context in which BIM is adopted, its applicative models in mobility and cloud systems, thus clarifying the concepts of Maturity Levels and Levels of Development (LOD). Then the guidelines about BIM and safety will be analysed, within both the Italian context and the international one.
In the second section the concept of virtual reality simulation is introduced, by focusing on the main benefits in the engineering field. Once the theoretical and practical notions of VR simulations are described, the document shall proceed with the analysis of the examined prototype, by describing its software structure and its functioning with practical examples. Then the user’s typologies and possible integration will be defined, as well as the potentialities of the Artificial Intelligence within the system and the related boundary conditions.
After talking about VR simulation technology, the third section provides a full picture of the virtuality continuum, analysing the notions of augmented reality and mixed reality, from the beginning till nowadays applicative models. The attention of this last section is focused also on the social influence, conscious or not, of the virtuality continuum, and therefore on its modern idea both in entertainment sector (movies, books, videogames) and in the construction one (architecture and building/civil engineering).
The aim of this dissertation is to provide a clearer and more complete understanding of both BIM and virtual reality, often subjected to various and chaotic interpretations, and then to demonstrate their possible and effective mutual integration. The methodology adopted for the development of this thesis is structured throughout several bibliographic sources, documentation, interview, as well as direct testing of the prototype’s software.
The Convergence of Blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT) and Building Informat...University of Piraeus
The Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry has not embraced digital transformation with the same enthusiasm as other industries (e.g. such as manufacture industry). Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a revolutionary technology that is characterized as the opportunity of the AEC industry to move to the digital era and improve the collaboration amongst the partners of this industry by exploiting Information and Communications Technologies (ICT). BIM provides all the necessary tools and automations to achieve end-to-end communication, data exchange and information sharing between project actors. Thus, the virtual 3D models generated in the context of engaging in the BIM process and as-delivered physical assets through Building Management Systems (BMS) could adopt Internet of Things (IoT) architectures and services. However, the orchestration of IoT in a highly modular environment with many moving parts and inter-dependencies between the stakeholders of this environment, lead to many security issues. Therefore, this paper proposes a system architecture that employs the Blockchain technology as a measure to secure and control the BIM technology coupled with IoT. The system architecture under scrutiny is considering the case of a museum building, where efficient security, management and monitoring are of great importance.

The growing use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for various applications requires ubiquitous and reliable connectivity for safe control and data exchange between these devices and ground terminals. Depending on the application, UAV-mounted wireless equipment can either be an aerial user equipment (AUE) that co-exists with the terrestrial users, or it can be a part of wireless infrastructure providing a range of services to the ground users. For instance, AUE can be used for real-time search and rescue and Aerial Base Station (ABS) can enhance coverage, capacity, and energy efficiency of wireless networks. We will start with discussing the open challenges of communication with UAVs. To give answers to the posed questions, we will focus on the UAV communication basics, providing the channel modeling background and giving guidelines on how various channel models should be used. Next, theoretical, simulation- and measurement-based approaches to address the key challenges for AUE usage will be presented. Moreover, we will provide a comprehensive overview on how UAV-mounted equipment (e.g. ABS) can be used as apart of the communication network. Based on the theoretical analysis, we will show how various network parameters (for example coverage area of ABSs, power efficiency, or user localization error)can be optimized. Finally, we will discuss how to ensure the safe use of UAVs via various RF-based techniques for detecting the presence of UAVs in the airspace (including Machine Learning and Passive Coherent Location techniques).

0x01 - Newton's Third Law: Static vs. Dynamic AbusersOWASP Beja
f you offer a service on the web, odds are that someone will abuse it. Be it an API, a SaaS, a PaaS, or even a static website, someone somewhere will try to figure out a way to use it to their own needs. In this talk we'll compare measures that are effective against static attackers and how to battle a dynamic attacker who adapts to your counter-measures.
