History Thanksgiving was first celebrated in the United States in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1621. It celebrated the first successful harvest by the Pilgrims. They were joined by Native Americans at the celebration. Originally, Thanksgiving was not celebrated every year. During the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln declared it to be a national holiday in 1863. Since then, Thanksgiving has always been the last Thursday of November.

Why? Thanksgiving was originally a religious holiday for people to give thanks to God for their fortunes. Although many people still do this, today the celebration is more of a time for family and friends to get together and enjoy each others’ company.  Additionally, Thanksgiving marks the unofficial start of the Christmas Season in the US.
Typical Food Thanksgiving is a feast; a lot of different foods are served. Foods that are served are usually native to North America The main dish at Thanksgiving is turkey (with gravy). Traditional side dishes include: Mashed potatoes Stuffing Dinner Rolls Cranberry Sauce People may choose to include: Pumpkins Yams Corn Green Beans Squash

Traditions Traditionally, primary schools will have children dress up as pilgrims and Native Americans (though we sometimes call them Indians) and do a play. are played as well, and many people often put together their own “Turkey Bowls” with friends and family.

Hand Turkey! Hand turkeys are simple and fun to make! First, trace your hand on a white piece of paper. Next color each of the fingers either red, yellow, orange, or purple. Add feet, eyes, wings, and a beak!
Apple Pie Recipe Ingredients : 1 pie shell ½ c unsalted butter 3 tbsp all-purpose flour ¼ c water ½ c white sugar ½ c packed brown sugar 8 Granny Smith apples -peeled, cored, and sliced. Directions: Preheat oven to  425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Melt the butter in a saucepan. Stir in flour to form a paste. Add water, white sugar and brown sugar, and bring to a boil. Reduce temperature and let simmer.  Place the bottom crust in your pan. Fill with apples, mounded slightly. Cover with a lattice work crust. Gently pour the sugar and butter liquid over the crust. Pour slowly so that it does not run off.  Bake 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft.
