Detecting Vulnerable Plaques with Multiresolution Analysis
This dissertation aims to develop a method to detect vulnerable plaques using multiresolution analysis of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) radiofrequency signals. The study evaluates the use of harmonic imaging with a polymer micro-machined ultrasound transducer to provide additional diagnostic information beyond what is possible with conventional IVUS. Specifically, the study develops new signal processing techniques using wavelets to accurately measure thin plaque caps and differentiate plaque components like lipids. This is significant as vulnerable plaques are responsible for most heart attacks but are difficult to identify with standard IVUS due to limited resolution. The study used a polymer micro-machined ultrasound transducer to acquire IVUS radiofrequency signals from ex vivo human coronary and carotid arteries. Wavelet analysis was applied to the fundamental and harmonic signals to characterize plaque components at multiple resolutions, with the goal of more accurately measuring thin fibrous caps and identifying lipid cores. Histological analysis was used to validate the imaging results. The successful adaptation of this multiresolution analysis technique could potentially enhance plaque characterization and reduce heart attacks caused by vulnerable plaque rupture.

She found pediatrics and the operating room to be her favorite rotations. Priscilla is considering careers as a registered nurse, physical therapy assistant, pediatrician, or physician's assistant.

1) The document reflects on a 15-minute nursing presentation the author completed on preventing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in surgical patients.
2) The author chose DVT prevention as the topic after caring for a patient who developed DVT after hip surgery. Extensive research was conducted to create the presentation.
