This document summarizes the Telestroke Program at Wake Forest Baptist Health (WFBH) in North Carolina. It discusses: 1) High stroke death rates in rural North Carolina counties that motivated WFBH to create a telestroke network to improve access to stroke care. 2) The telestroke network currently includes 9 regional hospitals that can access WFBH stroke specialists via telemedicine robots 24/7 for consultations. This has allowed more patients to receive tPA and avoid unnecessary transfers. 3) Since starting in 2009, the network has grown significantly and facilitated over 250 consultations, with most patients able to remain local but receive specialist care through telemedicine.
