8. D grade answer:
One way that the extract represents age is the way that nearly all the men on the building
site are probably 30+, which coincides it the ideology that only older man are into DIY.
Not much rough language , No media terms
When we see the headmaster the camera is pointing slightly upwards which signifies that with age
comes importance , and that he has been at this school for a long time.
Camera angle is not well expressed
The general Mise -en-Scene of the school suggests that it is a well established School that has
probably been there for quite a long time.
There is no school office
From an camerawork perspective, the younger people are rarely seen on their own and when they
speak, they often don't have very much screen time. This matches the ideology most parents
have, which is children should be seen, but not heard, which influences the audiences thought that to
focus on if he directors do not believe children are very important or control characters.
Repeating one aspect
The extract also represents younger people as subservient helpers, by the way that they are always
being told what to do by the adults, like when the girl is told to drive in to the town and pick up
something or when the boy seen sweeping outside the house.
Age is being related to ethnicity
This represents young people as people who are there to do chores for the adults so they can do
something else.
Age factor is explained, in very lenient way
A lot of the camera shots look down on the children, which represents them as almost
insignificant, This could be linked with the lack of screen time to represents younger people as
unimportant and over when they do have a line of dialogue, it is not generally needed unless it bears
some significance, like an opinion to a direct question from an adult.
Angles aspect is wrong but screen appearance can be considered
On the other hand adults or older people are represented as being in charge of everything through
things like camera angles that look up at them commanding dialogue and conversations with each
other.
Repeated fact again
An example of this is the perils Conversation with the headmaster When they are making
arrangements about the headmasters ear, the headmaster announces that he is taking the girl back
to school, to finish her exams, he implies that nothing can stop this, and that the girls opinion on this
subject is irrelevant.
Student has Not much clear idea (explaining the point)
Further evidence is when the man leaves the headmasters office and
tells the girl I want you ready to leave by the time, get back, which also insinuates that that the
girl has no choice in the mater.
Repeated fact again

9. When the adults decide to act, on the girls future ( explained in their dialogue) They
are represented as kind and looking out for the girl,
but when we see the Shot of the girl sneaking out of the house, it is represented as
rash and mistake.
Not enough explainatory
This represents young people as careless and unaware of the consequences of their
actions compared to the adults being represented as experienced and knowing that
going
back to school would be in her best interests. overall the extract represents adults
as the dominant age group and gives them control whereas young people are
represented as savants that can be ordered about will.
Young age is explained

11. A Grade Student:
The Mise en scene shown portraying the older generation
help us to
determine age of the characters. Mise en scene is the
combination of clothing/costume ,setting, language and the
way they are shown on camera to build an image of the
character. The headmaster is smartly dressed in a jacket and
v-neck jumper covering a shirt and tie. This shows he is well
off and this style suggests he is middle class. He drives an
estate car which also means he wants a plain car for
transport rather than to show off. His language and posture
shows an authority which age. His manners while speaking
to a younger person shows he has power. The girl Amy is at
a opposite end of the spectrum. She is shown as at timid
character by the angle of the camera and close up facial
expressions of wolfy. We know she is young because she
wears fashionable clothes instead of working clothes.
Camera shots are used to show different situations and to
show character relationships and feeling. The establishing
shot shows a country setting and the next shot shows
character. In the foreground we see Paul and another
character in a shabby hat and in the background we see
other middle aged working class character all similarity
dressed. This long shot shows the community at work and
shows the close relationship of all the men. The men are all
similarly dressed showing they are all within the same age
range.
A mid shot of Amy and Paul’s son show their relation ship
and age similarity. We are close enough to see that Paul's
son is also wearing working clothes but a more presentable
jacket and t-shirt. Amy is not wearing working clothes. A mid
shot allows us to see emotion and also shows Text Analysis
body
language. Amy is tense and wants to tell Paul’s son
12. Close up shots are used to show a Character emotion. With Close
ups
small facial expressions and mood changes can be posted up.
We see Amy’s face while she is desperately trying to remember
how to drive a car We are unaware that she is only 16 but we set
a glimpse that she is worried.
Close up allow us also to determine age. A solid expression and
deep concentration wrinkles on characters show us age whereas
frightened worried expressions show youth.
There is smooth editing throughout the sequence or it would
detect from our ability to enjoy the sequence as a whole. Without
smooth editing we are unable to be emerged into the story and
are less likely to believe erratic story lines. Instead of editing cuts
to show change of some sound is
Used. Jovial folk music is played when these is an up-tempo
scene where
everyone is at work but this quickly changes to a sound of low key
piece when Amy is running away. The change of pitch and tempo
sets the mood and our stance on the scene.
Monarch of the Glen is a soap. We know this because there are
lots of stereotypical characters in a soap. It also has a slow paced
storyline with lots of different stories running at the same time. In
soaps there is a theme of realism which allows us to relate it to
real life. Soaps have happy and sad stories running coherently
which allows the quick mood changes to be perfectly acceptable.
Soaps also have characters we make relationships with. In this
case Amy is seen as the innocent character even though she has
left school without permission.
Amy is a vulnerable character which allows us to take pitty on her.
We are unable to take pitty on a ruthless health less character.

14. My Answer:
In this clip the writer has shown "Representation of Age" by
different manner of speaking of the characters ,understanding
and reaction of ages. In the very beginning workers are shown,
all of them are seem to be of experienced age. While in the
conversation of Amy and Paul's son ,the costumes and walking
gesture tells that they are of a certain age group.
The Mise en scene is an expression used to describe the design
aspects of a theatre or film production, which essentially means
"visual theme" or "telling a story". Like in the start of the clip a hilly
area has been captured and some workforce are shown to
comprehend that all are of mature age. We could figure out that
they are only workers not communal associates as the director
has used mid shot and gave a glimpse that they are serious and
skilled. Moving on to next shot, We could see two youngster
conversation and reaction through the over the shoulder shot
and jump cut shows there attitude towards elders' instruction and
Paul's Eye-line Match demonstrate how he communicates to
Amy for chores.
We could hear a slight pitch of sounds introduced in the clip.
When the workers are shown only one of the chords of guitar is
constantly played to show workers has focus and stamina. But as
Amy has very immature attitude throughout the video clip , the
sound used in her screen appearance has incidental music. I
think the frequency tone used show that she is very childish.
Ahead of this all when she speaks to Paul's son , the dialogue

confident she
Although this age of people are always considered irresponsible

done anything which we could not aspect for this age group.
Amy starts the car , the close up shot shows her expressions
and to display Paul's son expression and the actions parallel
editing is used, towards Amy. The high acceleration sound of
the car shows that something is going to happen wrong and she
drives fast and soon the Non-Diegetic sound is added of an
accident. In the accident scene , the costume designer has used
variant pattern of costumes to grasp the idea of age difference.
Specifically Amy ,the young actress, has been put in the picture
as having impractical behavior and on the other hand Headmaster
has serious and concern in his act.
After this act, the editor has made a jump cut to Edward green
and Paul's conversation in office area in Paul's home. The
expensive and elegant Mise en scene is viewed to show how
formal and important discussion is going on. No casual behavior
as compare to Amy and Paul's son conversation.. Reaction shot
is used to make the audience
experiencing a flow of dialogues between them. Edward is
senior in age from Paul so having very straight forward speech.
To transfer the mode of act ,the actions acted are fast, which can
be only created by editing. Paul enter with cut in shot and then
camera man has taken Paul's low angle and rised with steady
shot to capture his anger over Amy. Using panning ,the
characters are taken in location where two shot is taken . The
over the shoulder shot has been assisting the both age
responses and patience on the screen.

The whole representation of age in this extract tells us that it
is through representation that people organize the world to
reflect a certain aspect. Like I have explained a certain ages of
our lives. The representation in clip didn’t say that young are
always stubborn headed and elders are always right. It is only
the one side of the mirror.
