identity…

       The most effective
       The most offensive
       The most thought-provoking
       The most illuminating about English identity

Now look deeper and consider:

         What sort of “cultures” these texts arise from:
         The social, ethnic, educational and gender backgrounds of the authors

A good example to people whose
English is painful to your ears?
The Scotch and the Irish leave you close to

There even are places where English
completely
disappears. In America, they haven't used it
for years!
Why can't the English teach their children

Norwegians learn Norwegian; the Greeks
have taught their
Greek. In France every Frenchman knows
his language fro "A" to "Zed"
The French never care what they do,
actually,
as long as they pronounce in properly.
Arabians learn Arabian with the speed of
summer lightning.
And Hebrews learn it backwards,
which is absolutely frightening.
But use proper English you're regarded as a
freak.
Why can't the English,
Why can't the English learn to speak?

This sceptr‟d isle – William Shakespeare

                                                   sometimes known as „Jerusalem‟
in The Tragedy of King Richard II (1594),
Act 2, Scene 1:
                                                   And did those feet in ancient time.
Methinks I am a prophet new inspired Walk upon Englands mountains green:
And thus expiring do foretell . . .:
                                                   And was the holy Lamb of God,
This royal throne of kings, this scepter'd isle, On Englands pleasant pastures seen!
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise;
This fortress built by Nature for herself
                                                   And did the Countenance Divine,
Against infection and the hand of war;
This happy breed of men, this little world, Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall, And was Jerusalem builded here,
Or as a moat defensive to a house, Among these dark Satanic Mills?
Against the envy of less happier lands;
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this
England,                                           Bring me my Bow of burning gold;

birth,
Renowned for their deeds as far from home, Bring me my Chariot of fire!
For Christian service and true chivalry,
As is the sepulchre in stubborn Jewry,
Of the world's ransom, blessed Mary's Son; I will not cease from Mental Fight,
This land of such dear souls, this dear dear
land, Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
Dear for her reputation through the world, Till we have built Jerusalem,
Is now leased out, I die pronouncing it,
Like to a tenement or pelting farm: In Englands green & pleasant Land
England, bound in with the triumphant sea
Whose rocky shore beats back the envious
siege
Of watery Neptune, is now bound in with (missing apostrophes etc the author‟s own)
shame,
With inky blots and rotten parchment bonds:
That England, that was wont to conquer
others,
Hath made a shameful conquest of itself.

  • 3. Why can’t the English learn how to speak? Listen Mr Oxford don Henry Look at her, a prisoner of the gutter, Condemned by every syllable she ever Me not no Oxford don uttered. me a simple immigrant By law she should be taken out and hung, from Clapham Common For the cold-blooded murder of the English I didn‟t graduate tongue. I immigrate Eliza Aaoooww! Henry imitating her Aaoooww! But listen Mr Oxford don Heaven's! What a noise! I‟m a man on de run This is what the British population, and a man on de run Calls an elementary education. Pickering is a dangerous one Oh, Counsel, I think you picked a poor example. I ent have no gun Henry Did I? I ent have no knife Hear them down in Soho square, but mugging de Queen‟s English Dropping "h's" everywhere. is the story of my life Speaking English anyway they like. You sir, did you go to school? I dont need no axe Man Wadaya tike me for, a fool? to split/ up yu syntax Henry No one taught him 'take' instead of I dont need no hammer 'tike! to mash/ up yu grammar Why can't the English teach their children how to speak? I warning you Mr Oxford don This verbal class distinction, by now, I‟m a wanted man Should be antique. If you spoke as she does, and a wanted man sir, is a dangerous one Instead of the way you do, Why, you might be selling flowers, too! Dem accuse me of assault Hear a Yorkshireman, or worse, on de Oxford dictionary/ Hear a Cornishman converse, imagine a concise peaceful man like me/ I'd rather hear a choir singing flat. dem want me serve time Chickens cackling in a barn Just like this for inciting rhyme to riot one! but I rekking it quiet down here in Clapham Common I‟m not a violent man Mr Oxford don Eliza Garn! Henry I ask you, sir, what sort of I only armed wit mih human breath word is that? but human breath It's "Aoooow" and "Garn" that keep her in her is a dangerous weapon place. Not her wretched clothes and dirty face. So mek dem send one big word after me Why can't the English teach their children I ent serving no jail sentence how to speak?
