"The Adventure of the Speckled Band" is one of 56 short Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the eigth story of twelve in the collection The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. It was originally published in Strand Magazine in February 1892.
Tinged with Gothic elements, "The Speckled Band" is considered by many to be one of Doyle's finest works, with the author himself calling it his best story. The story, alongside the rest of the Sherlock Holmes canon, has become a defining part of detective fiction. It has been adapted for television, film, theatre, radio, and a video game. It is also part of the exhibit at the Sherlock Holmes Museum.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Francesca Gottschalk from the OECD’s Centre for Educational Research and Innovation presents at the Ask an Expert Webinar: How can education support child empowerment?
1. Mr Otis is a businessman from
America. He wants to buy Lord
Canterville’s house. But Lord
Canterville says,’Mr Otis, there is a
ghost in this house.’ ‘A ghost?’ asks
Mr Otis,’there are no ghosts!!’
´Well…,’ Lord Canterville
interrupts, but Mr Otis says,
‘Don’t worry Lord Canterville, I
want to buy your house and
2. Mr Otis is married and has four
children, a son called Washington, a
daughter called Virginia and two
happy noisy twin boys. Mr Otis says,
‘Lord Canterville says there is a
ghost in the house!’ ‘A ghost! How
exciting !’ say the twins.
Mrs Otis points to the floor . ‘What is
that?’ she asks. ‘Oh! That is the blood
of Sir Simon Canterville’s wife, ‘ says
Mrs Umney , the housekeeper.’He
killed her right here in 1575.’’In 1575?
That’s impossible!’ says Mr Otis. ‘Yes !’
continues Mrs Umney, ‘and he
disappeared…but now he is a ghost!!
The Canterville Ghost!
3. Mr Otis’ son, Washington, takes a small
black crayon . ‘Pinkerton special
cleaner cleans this!’. The blood
disappears.
But the next morning THE BLOOD IS
ON THE FLOOR AGAIN! Mr Otis
doesn’t understand. The boys dance
and sing. ‘It is the ghost!’’Don’t be
silly!’ says Mrs Otis.
4. The night is windy and Mr Otis hears
a noise. It is the noise of chains on
the floor…CLANK CLANK CLANK!! ‘Oh!
Says Mr Otis, ‘What’s that?’
Mr Otis sees the ghost of Sir
Simon Canterville. He offers him
oil for the noisy chains. The ghost
is angry. Suddenly a big pillow flies
past the ghost head and he
jumps. He goes through the wall.
5. Sir Simon visits the Otis family
again and again. He tries different
things. He even tries saying a
poem…
…but nothing works!!
The Otis family is not
afraid of ghosts!!
6. One night Sir Simon is on his way to
the twin’s room when suddenly he
sees … A GHOST! Sir Simon runs!
Sir Simon goes to his room and hides
under the bed. Then, he decides to
speak to the ghost. He wants to be
friends with him.
7. Sir Simon speaks to the ghost but…the
ghost in on the floor. It isn’t a real
ghost! It is a sheet, a brush and a
pumpkin!
Now Sir Simon is in his room. He is very
sad and afraid of the twins!
One sunny day, he looks out of the
window and sees Mr Otis’ daughter,
Virginia, riding on a horse with her friend,
the Duke of Cheshire.
8. Virgina comes into the house. She is
about to go up the stairs to her
room when she sees a green light.
The light comes from under a door.
She opens the door and sees the ghost
on a chair next to the table. He is sad.
‘Poor ghost!’ she says, ‘What’s the
matter?’
9. The ghost looks at Virginia. ‘What’s the
matter?’ he says.’I can’t sleep and I am
tired. I want to sleep in the garden
under the big tree near the wood. I
want to listen to the silence and have
no yesterday and no tomorrow. But I
have to stay here with your family and
it isn’t easy!’
Virginia says ,’Poor Sir Simon! Can I help
you?’ ‘Yes, you can! I am bad but you
are good. Come with me and ask the
Angel of Death to forgive me and then I
can sleep.’ Virginia is afraid but helps Sir
Simon .
10. The ghost and Virginia walk
through a wall to find the Angel .
They disappear …
11. Everyone looks for Virginia . Lord
Cheshire, who is in love with
Virginia, runs upstairs and
downstairs and in the garden.
‘Virginia, Virginia! Where are you?’
he shouts.
Suddenly they hear a big CRASH and
Virginia appears. She has got an old box
in her hand with some beautiful jewels.
She looks at her family and says, ‘You
can’t see Sir Simon again.’
12. Virginia, her father and mother and
brothers go to the ghost room.
They can see a skeleton chained to a
wall. ‘Poor Sir Simon! His wife’s
brothers chained him to the wall
and he died of hunger! The twins say
‘Wow! A skeleton and chains!’
They bury Sir Simon in the garden
under the big tree near the wood.
Lord Canterville comes too. Mr Otis
tells him about the jewels but he
gives them to Virginia.
13. Virginia marries the Duke of Cheshire.
They visit Sir Simon’s grave some
years later. The Duke wants to know
what happened when Virginia was
with the ghost. But Virginia says she
can’t tell him, that the ghost helped
her understand about Life and Death
and that Love is stronger than both.
