Oh, now what? Another technobabble name - megaservice! What is a megaservice?
A megaservice is a microservice that is capable of processing up to one million logical operations per second. In this context, the service prefix indicates the expected maximum sustained per second logical operation throughput.
In this talk, we will look at the more common deca-service (tens of LOPS), hecto-service (hundreds of LOPS), and kilo-service (thousands of LOPS) implementation techniques. We examine some of the common performance bottlenecks and look at methods to push services to higher throughput levels.
I'll share our experiences with a demo microservice application that we are using to push the cloud service providers to their limits. The demo application is composed of two Akka CQRS microservices. The app provides an interactive world map UI that visualizes IoT devices' distribution spread across the planet. With the click of the mouse, we generate thousands, tens of thousands, even millions of IoT devices and observe how various databases and cloud systems react when push to the limit.
All of the application code is built using OSS such as Akka, Java, JavaScript, and Kubernetes. The demo app is available for you to use as a learning tool for building your megaservices.

New techniques have now emerged and others have been enhanced, while old testing techniques (used in monolith) drive us to a dead-end when we try to apply them to a microservices architecture.

As increasingly sophisticated attacks mount, the risk associated with a zero-day attack is significant. Traditional responses include perimeter monitoring and anti-malware agents. Unfortunately, those techniques introduce performance and management challenges when used at large VM densities, and may not work well with containerized applications.
Fortunately, the Xen Project community has collaborated to create a solution which reduces the potential of success associated with rootkit attack vectors. When combined with recent advancements in processor capabilities, and secure development models for container deployment, it’s possible to both protect against and be proactively alerted to potential zero-day attacks. In this session, we’ll cover models to limit the scope of compromise should an attack be mounted against your infrastructure. Two attack vectors will be illustrated, and we’ll see how it’s possible to be proactively alerted to potential zero-day actions without requiring significant reconfiguration of your datacenter environment.

IoT Security Issues and MQTT
Survey after survey puts IoT security as a primary concern for enterprises. As IoT proliferation grows, vulnerabilities and attacks are also growing too.
As the defacto protocol for IoT, the MQTT standard has been consistently evolving and between version 3.1.1 and version 5, it has a large repertoire of security features which, if implemented well, can thwart many kinds of attacks including denial of service and man in the middle attacks.

Understanding how to design an architecture that moves data from the edge to the cloud in a reliable, scalable, and secure manner is critical to the success of IIoT deployments.

Cyber threats consistently rank as a high priority for data center operators and their reliability teams. As increasingly sophisticated attacks mount, the risk associated with a zero-day attack is significant. Traditional responses include perimeter monitoring and anti-malware agents. Unfortunately, those techniques introduce performance and management challenges when used at large VM densities, and may not work well with containerized applications.
Fortunately, the Xen Project community has collaborated to create a solution which reduces the potential of success associated with rootkit attack vectors. When combined with recent advancements in processor capabilities, and secure development models for container deployment, it’s possible to both protect against and be proactively alerted to potential zero-day attacks. In this session, we’ll cover models to limit the scope of compromise should an attack be mounted against your infrastructure. Two attack vectors will be illustrated, and we’ll see how it’s possible to be proactively alerted to potential zero-day actions without requiring significant reconfiguration of your datacenter environment.

Here at HiveMQ, we continue to enhance our MQTT platform. HiveMQ 4.7 was released on September 14th, 2021. Some of the highlights of this release included:
Improvements to Cloud-Native Operations: With HiveMQ 4.7, it is easier to operate HiveMQ on cloud platforms. This release introduces machine-readable logs that allow out-of-box integration with popular log systems, like Splunk, Elastic, Loki, etc. HiveMQ 4.7 also includes a number of improvements to the HiveMQ Kubernetes Operator for more flexible deployments and enhanced security.

Introduction to MQTT Sparkplug: Plug 'n Play Interoperability for IIoT
A key challenge of IIoT deployments is integrating and sharing data between different systems and services. Many IIoT architectures become a complex set of integrations between hardware devices and software services. Even with MQTT as the hub of an IIoT system, true interoperability can be difficult to achieve.
Sparkplug is an emerging new specification built on top of MQTT that aims to break down the data silos created by pairwise integrations commonly found in IIoT architectures. Where MQTT allows for IIoT systems to decouple operations data from specific applications, Sparkplug defines a common format for MQTT data exchange that promotes plug ‘n play interoperability between hardware solutions and software solutions.
In this webcast, we will introduce the key concepts of MQTT Sparkplug and show how it can promote simplified IIoT architectures.
