Temptation
reconsidering
“What would Jesus do?”
James 1:12-16
Blessed is anyone who endures temptation. Such a one
has stood the test and will receive the crown of life
that the Lord has promised to those who love
him. No one, when tempted, should say, ‘I am being
tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil
and he himself tempts no one. But one is tempted
by one’s own desire, being lured and enticed by
it; then, when that desire has conceived, it gives
birth to sin, and that sin, when it is fully grown,
gives birth to death. Do not be deceived, my
beloved.
Luke 4:1-13
1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led
by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was
tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days,
and when they were over, he was famished. The devil said to
him, ‘If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a
loaf of bread.’ Jesus answered him, ‘It is written, “One does not
live by bread alone.” ’
5 Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the
kingdoms of the world. And the devil said to him, ‘To you I will
give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over
to me, and I give it to anyone I please. If you, then, will worship
me, it will all be yours.’ Jesus answered him, ‘It is written,
“Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.” ’
Luke 4:1-13 (cont.)
9 Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him
on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, ‘If you
are the Son of God, throw yourself down from
here, for it is written, “He will command his angels
concerning you, to protect you”, and “On their
hands they will bear you up, so that you will not
dash your foot against a stone.” ’ Jesus answered
him, ‘It is said, “Do not put the Lord your God to the
test.” ’ When the devil had finished every test, he
departed from him until an opportune time.
Genesis 3:4-6
4 But the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not
die; for God knows that when you eat of it your
eyes will be opened, and you will be like
God, knowing good and evil.’ So when the woman
saw that the tree was good for food, and that it
was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to
be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit
and ate; and she also gave some to her husband,
who was with her, and he ate.
Matthew 16:21-23
21 From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples
that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great
suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests
and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be
raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke
him, saying, ‘God forbid it, Lord! This must never
happen to you.’ But he turned and said to Peter, ‘Get
behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling-block to me;
for you are setting your mind not on divine things
but on human things.’
