Economic activity has led to several environmental consequences including atmospheric contamination from emissions, overexploitation of water resources and water contamination, deforestation which damages biodiversity, ground alteration from mining and construction, increased solid urban waste, and reduction in species diversity. The European Union and Spain have implemented environmental policies and protections such as Natura 2000 sites to help address these impacts from economic development and promote more sustainable practices.
