This document presents a series of quotes from 1703 to 1985 that show how new technologies used in education were criticized at different points in history. Teachers and administrators complained that students had become too dependent on slates, paper, pen and ink, store-bought ink, fountain pens, ballpoint pens, and handheld calculators rather than learning older methods. While technologies changed over time, each new method was seen as detracting from learning. The concluding statement notes that despite complaints, these technologies became integrated into education and new complaints will arise for future technologies.
