Editor's Notes
Welcome to the TEA Experience Cafe! We’re happy to have you with us and look forward to helping you discover what themed entertainment is all about and the myriad of career possibilities available to you within, as well as a little bit about the Themed Entertainment Association, or T-E-A, and how we might be able to help you on your professional journey. But first, let’s start with a little introductory video, featuring someone you might recognize…
So, we’re here today/tonight to talk about a few things.
The first is to build your understanding of this industry that might be new to you, but that is the professional home of tens of thousands of people around the world.
That includes telling you a little bit about the types of projects that TEA members create. These images represent just some of the projects that were recognized with Thea awards this year – our equivalent of the Oscars. As you can see, they cover a wide variety of fields – from the Cirque du Soleil show: Michael Jackson ONE, to Gardens by the Bay, a botanical garden in Singapore, to Titanic Belfast, a museum in Northern Ireland dedicated to that ill-fated 1912 voyage, to a multidimensional live show at Universal Studios Japan, to a one-of-a-kind carousel in Nantes, France.
We’re going to talk about our careers in the industry.
We’re going to talk about an industry association that we all belong to that represents the people who work in the industry.
And then – if you’re interested - we’ll begin to connect you to our industry, its people, and perhaps career path you may never have considered.
Defining the industry is difficult because the range of projects that we consider to be “themed entertainment” or “experience design” is ever-expanding. While theme parks are part of the industry, they are certainly not all of it, as you can see here.
All of these varying fields center around the concept of “extraordinary experiences”. Experiences that move, transform and educate. Experiences that create lifelong memories and bring people together. That transcend language barriers and cultural differences.
Themed Entertainment constitutes just such experiences. Themed entertainment experiences are designed and curated visitor experiences that add integrated storytelling and entertainment to built environments, installations and events at an ever-growing list of destinations worldwide.
The storytelling is where we (and perhaps someday you) come in…
… a facet in which you can apply the technical and management skills that you are already learning
So, a little bit about the TEA. The TEA is a non-profit global business association representing the creators of compelling experiences worldwide. It was founded over 20 years ago by a group of visionaries who wanted to provide a collective voice to the growing number of entrepreneurial companies in themed entertainment. It has grown from a 40-member regional association to a global association with 1,000 members representing 8,000 people worldwide. Company members include The Walt Disney Company, SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment, NBC Universal, Cedar Fair Entertainment Company, Europa Park and many others.
Currently, we have four divisions:
eastern north america
western north america
europe and the middle east
asia pacific
These divisions represent where the themed entertainment action is happening. Asia Pacific is our fastest growing membership area, and also happens to be the hottest sector of the world for our industry.
Here’s a look at where our members come from. While over half of our membership is located in North America (which makes sense given the two “entertainment capitals” of Orlando and LA), our Europe and Middle East division and our Asia Pacific division are rapidly growing. Given current industry trends, we expect this pie chart to look quite different in the next ten years!
This graphic gives you a sense of what our member companies do…as you can see, the number of jobs available out there is extremely diverse, from characteristically “creative” jobs like illustration and animation, to technical jobs like engineering, to more business-centric jobs like production, marketing and administration.
While 25 of our members are the “big guys”, the Disneys and Universals of the world with hundreds (and in some cases thousands) of employees, the majority of our member companies are much, much smaller. In fact, as you can see here, our largest category of members consists of those companies with 5 employees or less.
While we have a variety of membership categories, from standard for companies to associate for individuals to academic for schools, our fastest growing membership category is just for YOU. It’s our TEA NextGen Membership.
So, now let’s look at the TEA NextGen program and what it can do for you (look at all of those smiling faces!).
Let’s begin by visiting the committee’s purpose, which is to connect students, faculty and recent graduates (and by recent graduates, we mean out of school 3 years or less), to the TEA’s industry, organization and members, supporting and fostering the next generation of themed entertainment industry professionals. Currently there are almost 200 TEA NextGen members, and growing (rapidly).
Our activities are centered around our CORE initiatives: Collaboration (within TEA’s committees and between TEA’s NextGen program and those of other industry associations), Outreach (engaging with universities and recent graduates across the country and around the world), Resources (leveraging those online resources currently available and “coming soon” with our new website launching in August) and Education (educating NextGen members on the themed entertainment industry, the TEA and themselves). We developed our initiatives and subcommittees (Events and Outreach) around that CORE.
That all sounds good in theory, but we bet you’re thinking what’s in it for me? Well, the short answer is – lots! In addition to being able to attend Experience Cafés like these, you’ll be able to attend social mixers and exclusive behind-the-scenes events at venues all over the [country/Europe/Middle East/Asia] (and the world if you so choose). You can also attend our two major conferences, the TEA Summit and Thea Awards Weekend in April, and the SATE (Storytelling Architecture Technology Experience) conference in October, as well the “SATE Academy Days” we host in each region throughout the year. No matter where you live and study, you’ll be able to participate in our webinars right from the comfort of your couch or desk on personal topics like professional development and self-branding, and industry topics like how to determine the feasibility of a project. If you’d like to get your school involved in TEA, you can create a TEA @ University Club and join the ranks of such schools as Savannah Art and Design and CalArts. With the arrival of our new website, you’ll even be able to post a profile with a link to your portfolio and connect with companies via our Internship Exchange initiative. And we’re always trying to devise ways to create more value for our members by evolving the NextGen program. But perhaps the greatest benefit of a NextGen membership is the ability to interact and network with established industry professionals from around the world.
As you can see from Marissa’s quote, we’ve had some wonderful success stories of our NextGens getting jobs in the industry as the result of their membership. The next success story could be you!
So, if you’re interested in learning more after today’s panel, please ask one of the TEA members in the room or visit www.teaconnect.org. You can also follow like us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter or LinkedIn. Whatever path your career may travel, we wish you nothing but the best of luck and hope you get to do what you love! Thank you, and enjoy the rest of today’s Café.
