Bengsawan song
(By oliver)
The background of Bengawan Solo:
Written in 1940 by Gesang Martohartono, it is in the local
kroncong style, a popular folk style with influences from
Portuguese.
The song's widespread popularity began soon after its
composition. Locally it is strongly associated with the
Japanese occupation and the society of the time. In 1940
Gesang, then a young, destitute and untrained musician,
composed "Bengawan Solo" on a bamboo flute and began to
sing it at local functions and gatherings in his hometown of
Surakarta. It soon became well-known, and the song then
achieved national acclaim after it was broadcast to a wider
audience by radio stations.
Music of
Malaysia
◦ Music of Malaysia is the generic term for music that has
been created in various genres in Malaysia. A great variety
of genres in Malaysian music reflects the specific cultural
groups within multiethnic Malaysian society: Malay, Chinese,
Indian, Dayak, Kadazan-Dusun, Bajau, Orang Asli, Melanau,
Kristang and others.
◦ Both Malaysian popular music and contemporary art music
are essentially Western-based music combined with some
local elements. In 1950s, the musician P. Ramlee helped in
creating a Malaysian music that combined folks songs with
Western dance rhythms and western Asian music.
