Bardarash District
Slide 2
Bardarash is located 70 km North of Erbil, the Capital of Iraqi Kurdistan
Region. The population consists mainly of Sunni Muslim Kurds as well as
some Christians and Yazidis.
BardaRash District
• The name of Bardarash city means “black stone”.
• Under the Ottoman Empire, Bardarash was recognized first as a district (Nahiya)
in 1879. In 2006 Bardarash became a district of Dohuk province within the
semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), governed by the Kurdistan
Regional Government (KRG). The KRG has it’s own parliament and security
forces, but uses the Iraqi dinar and is represented in the Iraqi Parliament.
• It was also known as ‘Ashair Al Sab’aa, which it means the "Seven Tribes" in
English, because there are seven major tribes of the Gorani people living in
Bardarash.
• Bardarash District is located between two rivers which they are Upper- Zab/ Zey
Badinan and Xazir. These rivers flow into the nearby Tigris river.
• The land is used largely for agriculture: grazing, wheat growing and other crops.
It is very hot (up to 50 C) and very dry in the summer and, lush and green in late
winter and early spring.
• Bardarash consists of 7 villages that are linked to Bardarash center and three
sub-districts, which are Daratu (29 villages), Roviya (49 villages), Kalak (29
villages) . The population of Bardarash District now is more than 135,000
people. Slide 3

CSR Project - Construction of medical and emergency unit

in Dohuk or Erbil, putting increased risks to patients health & life.
Before Ongoing
CSR Project - Construction of medical and emergency unit
Slide 26
Impact: This will have a life saving impact to the community as patients
in emergency cases can be treated and stabilised at Bardarash before
being transferred to other central hospitals in Dohuk or Erbil, hence
increasing the chances of survival.
CSR Project - Afren park
Slide 27
The oldest park in the district, dating back to the 1970’s, had been neglected over
the years. The park is at the centre of Bardarash with easy public access and it can
be used daily by the community. This was the high priority project requested by
the Bardarash Mayor, municipality office and the local community.
Before After
CSR Project - Afren park
Slide 28
Impact: the park is used by majority of local community from surrounding
villages and central Bardarash. By introducing children play area, picnic
tables, snack area and refurbishing washrooms, most families are enjoying
using the park.
CSR Project - Newroz (Kurdish new year)
Slide 29
Supplied and installed the Newroz flame. Newroz is celebrated in
Bardarash every year on a hilltop above the city where locals
gather to observe Kurdish new year. It gives the residents of
Bardarash a new year celebration to remember year after year.
CSR Project – Water Wells

Community Affairs – Management system

Slide 35
Community Challenge 1 – Local contractors
Community Affairs – Management system
Problem: Local companies are finding it difficult to compete for
projects. i.e. small value projects such as water hauling, supplying fuel,
catering etc..
Solution: Set up tendering workshops to assist in pre-qualification &
expectations
Result: Local company is given a chance to compete and therefore
they do not feel that they have been left out
Slide 36
Community Challenge 2 – Local employment
Community Affairs – Management system
Problem: Local villagers getting frustrated because they are not being
offered employment. (Mostly unskilled work: cleaning, catering,
maintenance, etc..
Solution: Set up a database with the assistance of the Mayor’s office
and village elders, listing people with their contact details looking for
employment.
Result: Afren CSR has an up to date list of villagers looking for work,
which is distributed to our operations and contractors.
Slide 37
Challenges within Afren
Community Affairs – Management system
Challenge: Applying corporate processes and procedures to local
contractors. The biggest challenge CSR has is getting local companies
to follow and meet requirements such as complying with technical &
EHS standards.
Solution: Simplify the process. Give the local companies an
opportunity to perform on a trial period and give them adequate
training so they can perform the job.
Outcome: More local companies will be educated to follow procedures
and meet required Afren standards, therefore leading to better
community relations.
Slide 38

Sustainability
Example: Bardarash Park Renovation Project
• Park is in constant use by local community in a central location
• Managed by Municipality Directorate of Bardarash
• Positive environmental impact - tree & flower plantings
• Creates jobs for locals
• Multiple usage, i.e. picnics, sports and children's play area
• Park is upgradable - Afren plan to expand on project for many
years to come
Slide 39
Community Affairs – Management system
Many government projects in Kurdistan are non-sustainable
• Authorities do not follow up on projects
• No long term planning , training or procedures in place
• Lack of project management mostly due to limited experience
