What is post-3R RDA?
PART 1
Teaching RDA After 3R
6. RDA: Community and TKTKKTKT August 19, 20196
RDA and 3R
• RDA Toolkit Restructure and Redesign (3R)
Project (2017- )
• Changes in both content and presentation
• Many current reference and teaching
materials may become outdated or
confusing
Teaching RDA After 3R
7. RDA: Community and TKTKKTKT August 19, 20197
Why did this happen?
• The changing data environment
• Improve user experiences, cataloging work
• Content changes are driven by conceptual
changes in bibliographic theory (LRM)
• Presentation changes are driven by move
toward database structure,
• Linked data compatibility
Teaching RDA After 3R
8. RDA: Community and TKTKKTKT August 19, 20198
What will happen when?
• Current RDA Toolkit site is available, but static
• RDA Toolkit Beta site is now available
• RSC has NOT authorized the Beta site for use in
cataloging work yet
• In near future, RSC will announce the Beta site as
being the officially recognized text
• Application profiles and best practices coming
soon
• Previous version of the Toolkit will then remain
available for 1 year

New concepts, new terms
• LRM entities
• Agent, Nomen
• Records Metadata description sets
• Relationship designators Relationship
elements
• Vocabulary encoding schemes (VES)
• Recording methods, transcription
• Provenance
• Application profiles

Example: How do I record
a title proper?
1. Drill down/browse
• Entities Manifestation Elements title proper
2. Search
• All search Limit results to “elements” title proper
3. Search
• Exact title search title proper
4. Search
• All search 2.3.2 title proper
5. Bookmarks
• Bookmarks and Notes title proper

A note on current realities…
• Application profiles, best practices still in
development
• Many examples are still being added
• Software and/or templates…
• Some things in post-3R RDA are just not
possible in MARC environment
• Some things are possible, but are curtailed
or combined (e.g., Nomens)

What should students know?
PART 3
Teaching RDA After 3R
27. RDA: Community and TKTKKTKT August 19, 201927
Assessing student needs
• Classroom students
• Less practical experience, need principles,
basic rules
• Workplace students
• More experienced, autonomous, have
more specific objectives
Teaching RDA After 3R
28. RDA: Community and TKTKKTKT August 19, 201928
Providing background
• LRM
• RDA’s purpose
• Guidance pages: Introduction to RDA,
Resource description, User tasks
• Make a Document!
• RDA’s history
• Supplement current readings with 3R news
Teaching RDA After 3R
29. RDA: Community and TKTKKTKT August 19, 201929
Providing a framework
• Entities
• Elements
• Descriptive: no range
• Associative: range is an Entity
• Vocabulary Encoding Schemes (VES)
• Supports: Guidance, Resources, Policies
• Externals: APs, templates, local policy

Understanding Entities
Teaching RDA After 3R
31. RDA: Community and TKTKKTKT August 19, 201931
Describing Entities
• Metadata description sets (records)
• Composed of:
• Descriptive/attribute elements
• Associative/relationship elements
• As before, most current implementation
scenarios combine several LRM entities
together into 1 bibliographic record

Cataloging exercises with
post-3R RDA
• Describing LRM entities
• RIMMF4
http://www.marcofquality.com/wiki/rimmf4/doku.php
• Creating traditional bibliographic and
authority records
• For either option, you’ll likely be able to adjust
currently existing materials
Teaching RDA After 3R
36. RDA: Community and TKTKKTKT August 19, 201936
Which elements do I need?
• With flexibility comes less prescription: RDA
has little to say on the matter now
• Ultimately, the answer will come from
application profiles
• For now, still relying on previous guidance
(e.g., LC-PCC, BIBCO Standard record)

interact with RDA anyway?
• Introductory class
• Advanced class
• Workplace
