  32. 32. TRANSACTION TO TRANSFORMATION
  33. 33. TRANSACTION TO TRANSFORMATION …we recognize today that the focus of excellent library design should be to delight users, not to warehouse objects. This simple guiding principle creates boundless opportunities for architects and librarians to create inspirational centers of learning. In addition to providing shelves of books, libraries today must, at a minimum, provide those catalysts of curiosity that engage the mind and uplift the spirit: natural light, ubiquitous but largely invisible technology and a variety of spaces flexibly designed for independent study or collaboration.
  34. 34. DESIGN/BUILD SELECTION PROCESS • Request for Proposals (RFP) for Design/Build services issued in early 2018 • Library will hold a pre-proposal conference to respond to questions from prospective bidders • Short list of finalists will be asked to make presentations to a library panel • Two community members (selected by Councilmember McDuffie) will serve as advisory members on panel • Winners will be notified after which Board of Trustees and City Council must approve contract
  35. 35. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT • Library works with Friends leadership to schedule a tour of several libraries • Surveys and Focus groups • Approximately Five Community Meetings During Concept and Schematic Design Phases • Regulatory review from Commission of Fine Arts and Advisory Neighborhood Commission • Review from local civic associations • Online engagement at: www.dclibrary.org/newlamondriggs
  36. 36. NEXT STEPS / STAYING CONNECTED • Library & Friends leadership will coordinate tour • Website and surveys will be available at www.dclibrary.org/newlamondriggs • Library will work with CM McDuffie to identify advisory members for Design/Build team selection panel • Project kick-off / Community Meeting Summer 2018 CONTACTS Martha Saccocio (martha.saccocio@dc.gov)
