A system that gives minorities preferential
treatment, especially in hiring and education.
Some important dates are:
– 1961 – John F. Kennedy encouraged contractors working with
  the government to hire employees w/o regard to race
– President Johnson extended and required certain businesses to
  have hiring plans that added minorities to their companies
– 1964 – Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act banned racial
  discrimination in employment and created the Equal
  Employment Opportunity Commission
– 1970 – Supreme Court began hearing challenges
– 1978- Allan Bakke, a white medical student, sued University of
  California at Davis for admitting minorities with much lower
  scores than his
– Affirmative Action ended with President Reagan
– 1995 – University of California voted to discontinue Affirmative
  Action
