The History of Affirmative Action

                  The term “affirmative
                   action” was first used in
                   1961 by President John
                   F. Kennedy.
 At that time, it stood for
                   the action that should be
                   taken when an act of
                   discrimination against
                   minorities was
                   committed.
The Civil
 Rights Act of
     1964
Established to
ensure that
“affirmative
action” was taken
against those who
were found guilty
of discrimination. “This is the next and more profound
Signed by stage of the battle for civil rights,”
President Lyndon Johnson asserted. “We seek...not just

Executive Order equality as a fact and as a result.”

Reverse Discrimination

 By the late 1970’s, the
  negative effects of
  affirmative action
  became evident.
 White males were now
  being discriminated
  against in order for
  schools and businesses to
  fill their “quotas” for
  minorities.
The Controversy Surrounding Affirmative Action

Inequality of Employment
                               and Universities

 Whites, especially  Qualified white
white males felt that students were being

the “race card” to basis of their skin

they were not qualified unqualified minorities
to hold. could be enrolled to fill
                            diversification quotas.
In 2003, the
University of VS.
Michigan’s
affirmative action
policies were ruled

The Supreme Court
ruled in favor of the
use of affirmative

was told to modify

Focus of Affirmative Action

capitalism, when minorities based on household

Economic Effects of Affirmative Action

Food for Thought

Do you think affirmative action should focus on
race/gender or shift focus to socioeconomic
                   status?

Should affirmative action policies be done away
               with altogether?

  2. President Johnson signed the 1964 Civil Rights Act in July of that year. It introduced:it gave federal government the right to end segregation in the Southit prohibited segregation in public places. A public place was anywhere that received any form of federal (tax) funding (most places). This stopped lawyers homing in on the private places issue. This act tried to cover every aspect that some lawyer might use to avoid implementing this act.an Equal Employment Commission was createdfederal funding would not be given to segregated schools (note that these had been banned in 1954, ten years previous!)any company that wanted federal business (the biggest spender of money in American business) had to have a pro-civil rights charter. Any segregationist company that applied for a federal contact would not get it.http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/1964_civil_rights_act.htmExecutive Order 11246, promulgated by President Johnson in 1965 and subsequently revised by other presidents. This executive order applies to federal agencies and certain private companies that do business with the federal government. It has three key requirements: (a) The organization must have and abide by an equal opportunity policy. (b) The organization must analyze its workforce to assess possible underutilization of women and ethnic minorities, where underutilization is defined in terms of qualified applicants or potential applicants. (c) If underutilization is revealed, the organization must develop a plan of action to eliminate it, and must make a good faith effort to execute the plan.
  3. The essential basis of this argument, whatever its particular focus, is a 'zero-sum game' of wealth, in which everyone cuts pieces of a 'wealth pie,' if you will, which can only be sliced so many ways and is only so large. According to this, any addition to the amount of wealth must have been balanced by its removal from somewhere else. The additions and subtractions add up to consistent amount. Wealth may not be created, only redistributed, the gain and loss adding up to zero. What about multiracial people? Where do they fit?
