The award is designed to commemorate the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and to honor Mrs. Coretta Scott King. Every year, the award is given to African American authors and illustrators who empathize the importance and contributions of the African American culture and influences within a diverse society. The Moon Over Star by Dianna Hutts Aston illustrated by Jerry Pinkney is about a young African American girl in 1969 who dreams about going to the moon. As Neil Armstrong was attempting to land his space shuttle, The Eagle, on the moon, Mae’s eyes were opened to all of the possibilities that life has to offer.

Voice Over: Before JerryPinkney created the illustrations for The Old African by Julius Lester, he visited an exhibit at the Schromburg Center for Research in Black culture. In the exhibit, he was able to see evidence of the brutality of the black holocaust in order to get inspiration for his art work. He wanted truth within his illustrations, so he came in contact with an African historian who willingly educated him on the Ybo people he would be depicting within the story. Voice Over: Jerry Pinkey, not only illustrated The Lion and The Mouse, but he also wrote this familiar tale. This is one of his favorite childhood fable because it shows how the meek can over trump the mighty. For him, a wordless narration seemed natural because he wanted the reader’s imagination to drive the narrative through the use of the illustrations.
