Transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD) can be used to diagnose cerebral circulatory arrest, which indicates brain death. TCD is non-invasive, can be performed at the bedside, and does not require contrast agents. During development of cerebral circulatory arrest, TCD detects four stages of changing blood flow patterns as intracranial pressure increases, ultimately showing cessation of flow in the basal arteries. Detection of cerebral circulatory arrest by TCD, along with other clinical assessments, can help confirm brain death.
