Traumatic brain injury and domestic violence are closely linked, as the head is a common target of domestic abuse. Victims of domestic violence are at high risk for multiple brain injuries, which can exacerbate cognitive, physical, and emotional symptoms over time. Left undiagnosed and untreated, brain injuries increase the challenges victims face when seeking help and safety from abusive situations. Screening and appropriate referrals are needed to address the complex issues that arise from the interaction between domestic violence and traumatic brain injury.
