Synth-pop originated in the United States and United Kingdom in the 1970s, featuring the synthesizer as the dominant musical instrument. Some of the earliest and most recognized synth-pop artists were Kraftwerk, Duran Duran, Ultravox, and New Order. Iconic synth-pop songs from the 1980s include "I Ran (So Far Away)" by A Flock of Seagulls and "Take On Me" by a-ha, which reached number 1 and 2 on music charts in the US and UK, respectively.
