2. Where did Grime music originate from?
Grime music is a type of rap music that emerged in London in the early 2000s.
The music was influenced by a variety of other different genres such as UK
garage music and electronic music but has been inspired by hip hop. The rapping
in it is a certain style and will often revolve around the harsh and gritty truth of
living in an urban lifestyle/area such as London.

the grime/rap music culture. They do a variety of rewards such as the ‘Video of
the year’, ‘Personality of the year’, ‘Mixtape of the year’, ‘Artist of the year’ and
many more.

Rapping from an urban area is the main key feature of grime. Grime music is
about the hard lifestyle that people live in in these urban areas such as London
which is where most Grime rappers come from. However it doesn’t just have to
be London, Grime has emerged across the whole of the UK in the 1st century and
the second most famous place for Grime music is Birmingham.
Grime is basically rapping over an electronic or garage type beat. The lyrics of
the rapping are very explicit and violent from drugs to death and conflict with
gangs etc.
However Grime music doesn’t always have to be about these things and some
songs are quite emotional and talk about growing up with obstacles always
getting in the way. Such as Konan – My Life, is about his step dad being shot by
an ex gang member of Konans and Konan shows his respect for his step dad
saving his life.

Grime has had its influence on a lot of people in the UK and worldwide and the
fashion has influenced a lot of people. Grime artists often wear tracksuits such
as Nike, Adidas and Puma etc. Nike is very popular within the grime seen and a
big fashion staple of Grime are Nike shoes such as Airmax 95s. A lot of people
choose to wear ‘Messenger bags’ also known as man bags. Grime artists used to
use them for keeping lyrics in or mobile phones however they are just used for
whatever personal needs.
