The target audience for horror films is an older audience of people aged around 15, 18 and
older due to the themes in horror films being mature and frightening. If a younger audience
were to watch horror films they would probably be traumatised or upset and scared by it,
which is why the horror genre is mostly aimed at an older audience.
Depending on the severity of the horror film they will be aimed at different audiences, for
example a mild creepy horror film might have the target audience of teenagers however a
more gory horror film might be aimed at an older audience of 18+
This is because the themes of horror movies can be mature and very bloody and gory or
psychological and these things can damage young and impressionable minds.
People can watch horror movies for excitement, enjoyment, escapism, to be scared, for
interest, curiosity, to open their minds and other reasons. If I were to make a horror movie
opening it would have to have a rating so that younger people couldn’t get traumatised by
the themes or the content of it.
The people that watch horror movies tend to prefer different typical horror movie features,
for example one person might prefer gore to psychological whereas another person might
prefer psychological to gore, therefore the target audience could differ from the type of
horror movie it is.
People who watch horror movies could watch
them because they have interests in
supernatural things, death, murders, and scary
themes. People might also watch horror
movies for escapism, to have excitement and
thrill in their lives away from the real world.

tense of quiet and eerie. The music in horror
movies plays a major role in the success rate for the
movie because it adds so much depth and emotion
to the movie and helps set an atmosphere or feel of
