• Indie, or independent, music is that which is produced outside of mainstream record labels like Columbia and RCA.
As indie refers to how the artist produces their music, genres can range from pop to jazz to grunge.

initial fan base and reputation. They have to pay for their own studio time, record releases and promotion. Indie
bands are more likely to be played on alternative radio stations, unless a large record company has given them a
loan, in which case because the company get the royalties, the band get better promotion and air time.

• Alternative music is named so as it is music that doesn’t quite fit into a specific genre, instead it spans a few. It can
occasionally be mistaken for another genre; but varied genre-crossing elements of the sound determine it as
alternative. It is a wide spread genre, with artists ranging from ethereal Kate Bush to grunge-y girl band Babes In
Toyland, to spoof rap punk band Mindless Self Indulgence. It began to form in around the mid 80s, where bands
such as Radiohead and Nirvana incorporated elements of other genres into rock, creating a sound harder to pin
down to one genre. Alternative music has made its way into mainstream, and differs from the early version. A lot
of alt bands start out as indie bands, despite this.

10 in UK albums. Florence and the Machine is an indie rock band, turned household name. Florence’s third album peaked at number one of the UK
charts. Their other 2 albums both reached 6 and 14. Lana Del Rey’s newest album Ultraviolence hit number 1 on the charts, and her debut hit
number 2.
