Rock music is a genre of music that originated in 1950s America and kept on
developing into many sub-genres. It is usually consisted of one or more vocalist, at
least one electric guitar, a bass guitar, drums and more recently some synth
elements.
Rock songs are usually based on a 4/4 time signature and is centred around the
electric guitar, which is usually heavily distorted. They usually have a verse-chorus
form, meaning a song will feature a verse and then a chorus, the chorus usually
being the same every time it is repeated and the verse varying in lyrics.
Rock music places a higher degree of emphasis on musicianship and performance
during live shows. This is very different to pop music as generally, pop artists are a
single person who only sings and has people behind the scenes who write and
make the music.
Over many years, there has been a massive increase in the number of sub-genres.
Some of these include, metal, heavy metal, nu-metal, hardcore, post-hardcore,
punk rock, soft rock etc.
Nowadays, the number of people who listen to rock music is significantly
outweighed by those who like pop or other genres.
