2. – An intriguing paradox: Expanding Infrastructural Facilities, Declining
Educational Standards
– What’s missing?
– What we (the teachers) can do?
– Revive co-curricular activities in our campuses
– Why to do (rewards)? Our social responsibility, infinite possibilities for
students, institutions, society
Outline
5. • An abject decline in educational standards is a well-known fact, various
attempts have been made to arrest the downfall but there is hardly any
noticeable improvement. The consecutive annual reports of the FPSC has
portrayed a dismal picture. The candidates appearing in competitive
exams have incrementally demonstrated a lack of language, thinking and
analytical skills coupled with strong disposition for rote-learning.
FPSC Reports: Observations
6. • Apart from multiple other factors, one main reason for such a
pathetic situation is lifeless, barren and un-academic environment
that prevails over our campuses (except for the center vast
periphery presents a dull lackluster life at its campuses. The co-
curricular activities, once the hallmark of schools and colleges even
in the remote areas, are unfortunately, on decline.
• At times, education institutions do stage manage some co-curricular
activities to comply with the official directives but except for a few
old/urban institutions we don’t have routinized these activities.
What’s Missing?
7. • Basic Skills
• Reading, Writing and Speaking
• Analysis & Thinking skills
• Life Skills
Consequences: Dangerous decline in learning
8. • Identifying the Creative Core: Identify at least one such (focal)
person in one institution, assigning him/her responsibility to
organize co-curricular activities.
• Criterion for Focal person: I- The focal person should have a
genuine interest in co-curricular activities. II- He/She must be
conversant with ICTs
• Establishing Societies in the colleges.
• Writing Constitutions & getting it approved by the College
Councils
• Guiding Principle of activities: Focus on developing reading,
writing, speaking and thinking skills among students. Teacher’s role
as facilitator. Student-centered activities.
Bringing life back to our campuses
9. PERs & Co-curricular: Principals should make contribution
towards co-curricular activities part of annual evaluation
reports.
Restoring Tutorial Period: Weekly one-hour tutorial period
must be re-introduced in every college. Principals be advised
to select the right person in consultation with the focal
persons to make groups and make it effective.
Scope: Rawalpindi District be selected as pilot project for this
session
Carrier Counselling. Capacity Building opportunities be
explored and made available for the students, through these
networks of the creative core.
10. • Making societies mandatory for
colleges (like KPK)
• Time-consuming
• May end up in on paper
compliance only
Option 2: changing law
• Can begin instantly with a pilot
project
• Identifying the right persons
• Crash training programs
• Establishing societies under written
constitutions
• Encouraging, facilitating to make
college blog/website& share activities
• A subtle monitoring
Option 1: initiative within
existing structure
Co-curricular activities are matter of
cultivation not imposition
