Designing WITH Users at Digital Summit 2011Zach Pousman
The document discusses designing products with user involvement. It recommends bringing users into the design process as partners to create products that users find delightful. Designing with users can improve usability and return on investment through increased use and easy marketing. However, user involvement may not be needed for small changes or when a design concept is novel and undefined. The presentation provides examples of techniques for involving users at different stages, such as contextual inquiry, probes, and creative activities.
This document provides an introduction to product design. It defines product design as a way of thinking divergently, making iteratively, and experiencing empathetically with respect to products. Product design is about life and death as well as innovation. The product design process involves discovering needs, defining concepts, developing prototypes, and delivering the final product through an iterative process using various tools.

This document discusses design thinking and the design process. It argues that the traditional artifact-oriented design process, where the designer focuses only on creating the object, is flawed. Instead, it promotes an experience-oriented process where the designer focuses first on designing scenarios of how people will interact with and experience a product. The key aspects are empathizing with user needs and designing for useful experiences rather than just making things. For true design thinking to occur, the designer must genuinely care about how the product impacts people.
Glass is used extensively in modern interiors and façades to provide a sense of lightness, modernity, and openness. When used on exterior walls, glass blurs the boundary between indoors and outdoors, creating an expansive visual space. In interiors, glass is used in many innovative forms such as partitions, splashbacks, sculptures, and more. Architects and designers are pushing the boundaries of how glass can transform interior spaces.
Conceptualizing the Maker: Empowering Personal Identity through Creative Appr...Binaebi Akah
This research thesis attempts to define an existing subset of end users as makers.
These makers bridge the gaps between technological gadgets, creative appropriation, and identity through their bricolage of hacking, crafting, online tutorials, and the materials and knowledge ready at hand. Further, in studying makers this thesis refers to the exploding online and offline culture of Steampunk as a case study.
What can the field of Human-computer Interaction learn from the Steampunk makers? What will you, as an interaction designer, do to empower and facilitate such personally identifiable creative acts?
What will you do to make appropriation possible?

Kennedy exhibited leadership by advocating for the goal of putting a man on the moon in a compelling speech, while NASA project managers took on the managerial role of implementing the goal. The document argues that both leadership and management are needed for projects to succeed, but that libraries often have more of one than the other. It advocates for cultivating both skills among library staff.
The study examined the effect of contextualized advisement and competition on student attitude towards mathematics using a computer-based simulation game. It found that students who received advisement in the game had more positive math attitudes. While competition did not affect overall math attitude, it did have a positive impact on reducing math anxiety when advisement was provided. However, the hypothesis that students in the simulation game would have better attitudes than the control group was not supported.

Mujib Ahmed and Lalita Tharani founded Collaborative Architecture in 2002 after meeting on a presentation. Since then, their Mumbai-based firm has grown significantly, winning 14 national and 2 international awards for their projects. Their designs are intuitive and layered, combining logical, irrational, and poetic thoughts. They draw from diverse influences and are inspired by designers' processes rather than just their designs. Three of their notable projects showcase their approach: Wedge-1, a prototype showroom with cutouts revealing and masking displays; Wrap-4, a car showroom with vehicles as the focal point; and a minuscule bedroom prototype maximizing space through seamless Corian furniture.
The presentation provides information about the National Institute of Design (NID) in India. It discusses that NID was established in 1961 by the Government of India and currently has three campuses offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs in fields like industrial design, communication design, textile and apparel design. It provides details about the various courses offered at different campuses and their eligibility criteria. It also gives an overview of the admission process and sample questions asked during admissions. Finally, it promotes an academy that provides training to help students prepare and get admission into NID and other design institutes.

This document proposes an installation to help users better understand colors. It would allow users to explore different color combinations and apply them to their own designs. The goal is to provide an intuitive sense of color pairing that can be useful for visual designs and daily life. Research was conducted on existing touchscreen painting software to inform the design of an application that classifies and tests understandings of color uniqueness.
It’s important for business executives to understand a few design basics to communicate effectively with the designers. This session goes in-depth on which design techniques and principles ought to be part of every executive’s vernacular. It covers the basics of both high level interaction design and lower-level visual design in a way that maximizes energy and time in the approval process. Presented at Web 2.0 Expo, October 2011, by Anthony Franco, President of EffectiveUI, and Michael Salamon, Lead Experience Architect at EffectiveUI.
You’ve embarked upon a user experience project – updating your website or creating a Web or mobile app. You know there will be an element of visual and experience design, but do you understand the basics behind why your designers are making the decisions and recommendations they make?
It’s important to understand some design basics in order to communicate effectively with the designers on your team. While many of us have an intuitive feel for what works and what doesn’t, developing a vocabulary to describe your issues and feedback and understanding the techniques required to validate your hunches are important skills in order to ensure the success of your project.
This session goes in-depth on which design techniques and principles ought to be part of every executive’s vernacular. By the end of the session attendees will understand the basics of both high level interaction design and lower-level visual design in a way that maximizes energy and time in the approval process, including:
• Basic design principles to help executives understand a design’s intent. This includes a basic understanding of layout, color theory and typography. • Design vocabulary, heuristics and analysis techniques • The difference between information architecture and interaction design, and how both have a critical yet often unseen influence on the development of the end project • Why incorporating user research is critical to good design
This document discusses speculative design and its use in preparing for future challenges. Speculative design imagines possible futures and debates their implications before they happen. It operates on an intellectual level by placing new technologies in imaginary everyday situations. Speculative design can manifest possibilities and facilitate more desirable futures. It triggers designers to think in new environments and systems. Speculative design is presented as an attitude that can be introduced in standard design processes. Examples are given of speculative design projects like DIY surgical robots and designing for an overpopulated planet. The document advocates joining a meetup group to get involved in speculative design.

Designing with the Body: Learning to Physically PrototypeDavid Sherwin
This is a 75-minute workshop about physically prototyping products, services, and experiences. Workshop attendees selected a design challenge, which was structured in a way to teach them about the value of prototyping their design ideas earlier in the overall design process—especially for highly complex problems. I facilitated this workshop twice at AIGA Seattle's "Into the Woods" conference at Sleeping Lady Lodge in Leavenworth, WA on October 15-16, 2010.
The document discusses the current state and future of design education in India. It notes that while India has a rich legacy in crafts and culture, it has relatively few design schools compared to other countries. It suggests reforms for design education, including emphasizing design theory with real examples, teaching the business of design and strategy, encouraging design entrepreneurship, and facilitating more industry collaboration. The goal is to help students become opinionated designers who can critically evaluate design and create soulful, inclusive designs that can change society.

The document discusses the importance of incorporating visual art into industrial product design. It argues that visual art is not just about aesthetics, but is a form of human expression that can be applied to engineering products through techniques like incorporating various materials, textures, and artistic compositions. When applied throughout a product's visible and non-visible areas, visual art can help differentiate products, drive consumer experience and consideration, and ultimately empower economies. The document advocates training more engineering designers capable of transforming functional designs into aspirational products through the application of visual art principles.

Design training has taught me to be informed, rational and analytical in the decisions
I take to start and complete any project. Working on varied projects throughout my
training has also made me spontaneous in my work and to think unconventionally
for solving any problem. I am hardworking, patient and am able to survive and
breakthrough conventions. Sincerity does not prevent me from managing a little humor
here and there.
I look forward to travelling as it gives me an opportunity to experience differences and
diversity in places and make myself familiar with colours and texture which form an
integral part of my memory of the experience. These journeys and experiences serve
as my idea banks for future references. I greatly enjoy dancing and reading books
when I am not moving.
I would like to call myself a designer rather than a product designer as my training
has given me the confidence and the tools to use design thinking to solve varied design
problems.

Background Silver Filigree is a traditional craft of Karimnagar, Andhra Pradesh. It is when beaten silver foil is drawn into
fine wires, which are then fashioned together to make an object. Traditionally, its applications have been in jewelry and
other decorative and utility items for royal households. It is now a dying craft and our challenge was to contemporize it.
About the workshop It was a workshop where I was introduced to a craft based industry setting and to the complete
cycle of ideation, conceptualizing, prototyping and finally manufacturing of a product.

Concept The products I have come up with are centered on combining filigree with other surfaces so as to accentuate
the beauty and aesthetic of it. Also, my intention was to bring in this craft at the level of an everyday interaction of it with
the user so as to bridge the gap between the craft and the modern market.

Brief This was a self initiated diploma project brief executed under the guidance of Neelam Chibber of Industree.
The project is about developing a range of products which embody the spirit and essence of Kabir’s poetry, the mystic
poet of India This embodiment of the spirit of Kabir’s poetry is concealed in the message, material, texture, form, color
and detailing of the product. In totality the product communicates the aura of the couplet/doha it corresponds to.
Concept This concept is based on building and breaking. One goes through a playful process of opening and shutting
the zips. This process is repetitive and sort of meditative. Hence the doha corresponding to this talks about form and
formlessness.

Concept When I tried to find Kabir, he directed me towards myself. This search of the space within me began with
meditating and watching what goes on in my head, the thoughts which create noise and somehow distract oneself from
the search. During this process, I let my extremely talkative head just be its own nature. And I would pen down anything
that it thought. But sometimes it would be completely silent and I would feel a sense of light and openness inside me.
I would suddenly feel absolutely transparent like the air and the wind could pass through me. This idea of experiencing
the beautiful space within and the fact that beauty is in the inside and not really on the outside is what I want to convey
through the laptop case.

harm. The doha associated with this laptop case speaks of the same transcience and temporarity in life.

Concept Fragility and the temporality of life and things is just a matter of time. To give this a fun twist, I thought of
eggs and how they are the epitome of fragility. One can instantly relate fragility to an egg shell. This laptop case is
made of papier mache which has the look of an egg tray in casing the laptop as though eggs are kept inside, the laptop
being as fragile and temporary as an egg.

Brief This was a self initiated brief.
Concept Resources on our earth are finite and one needs to use it carefully and intelligently. Just the way this tap
switches on and off, the water and electricity resources will soon deplete and disappear (will ‘switch off’), and the earth
will soon run out due to our thoughtless consumption. This action of turning the tap to switch on and off the light is a
metaphor for this impermanence and the limitedness of resources, thus conveying the finiteness in its availability.

Background This project centers around the concept of ‘jugaad’, literally meaning to solve a problem keeping the lack
of resources in mind as a major consideration. Hence every component and material that has been used to make this
products is, either a waste or natural. This philosophy has a strong undertone of concepts like waste management, up
cycling and sustainability.
Concept 1 The first concept is called Swajal Sejal which is intended for a typical urban apartment living lifestyle where
people do not have space to grow vegetables and have no time to water them.

Concept 2 is for public spaces. It is based on the principle of a weighing balance. A pulley system has been used for
hanging the whole assembly and to balance the containers in such a way that the water container is always at a higher
level than the soil container. Therefore maintaining a constant flow of water from one container to another.

Brief The brief was to diversify the range of products made of textile waste. It was also essential for the product idea
to be simple in construction that made use of basic stitching skills. Since that was the only skill that SEWA (NGO) SHG
group of women possessed.

Brief To propose concepts for ‘The Dot’, a mobile cultural space(vehicle). It had to be adaptible to various sites, col-
lapsible and extensible to be used as a performance, exhibit or workshop space, for a mixed user group
Concept 1 The Bamboo Grove is a grove on wheels which works on the principle of ‘growing one’s own space’ using
bamboo. The number and arrangement of bamboo is highly flexible and customizable. Not only does bamboo form the
structure of the space but also the interactive elements in it. For instance, bamboo has a brilliant sonorous property
which allows one to make musical instruments within the space and have concerts and jamming sessions with people
interacting and making music in public. This could also be a mobile bamboo workshop for children where they could for
instance be learning about making toys or musical instruments or furniture with bamboo.

This arrangement has various functions:
- Backdrop for any performances.
- The various angles, permutations and combinations one can achieve through these units can be useful for cordoning
off spaces enabiling one to conduct different activities simultaneously.
- The different verticals and horizontals panels of the structure gives the user various interesting spaces to explore.
- The panels could also be re-cyclable- sun board which is discarded in very good condition after being used on
billboards. Honey-comb corrugated panels laminated with flex can also be used.
- These could also provide great spaces for public art and advertisements.
- Its openness of adapting to any space or site is of great advantage.

Background This concept was generated as a part of a workshop with the Freitag brothers, where we developed a
product and constructed a business model around it.
Concept It is a cable track laid on the wall with removable plug-ins (such as photo frames, shelves etc.). These once
inserted in the track, can be shifted and moved along it to suit the decor or need. The arrangement of the tracks can
be customized making a passive wall, interactive. The track can also be juxtaposed on a wallpaper in a way that it
corresponds to the image on it.

Brief Self initiated brief.
Concept When it comes to throwing waste, people don’t think twice (including me). Cardboard packaging boxes or
plastic bags, or empty bottles or containers or even scrap paper they never manage to find an appropriate use for these
things. I saw this as an opportunity and began my project called ‘Give it to me’. It proposed to offer a service which
takes waste (raw material) from the client, and is turned into attractive and functional products which is then either
sold back to the client or is sold in a retail outlet.

It’s organic and free flowing shape is inspired by the wave form of water. The advantage of a clay soap dish is that it pre-
vents the soap from dissolving in stagnant water. Also the form of it allows the water to drain away.

Brief To study products of a brand, their visual language and to develop forms that would fit into the product range.
Concept I developed various forms for locks for Pascal Bardel Designs. Products communicated a smooth, organic yet
mechanical look. I have tried to bring in the same in these products.

“It is the habit of the mind to be fearful, to cling to its boundaries and definitions. To lose them would be to lose one’s
identity. Naturally we are terrified of that. But long before we get to that point, we’re scared of losing our jobs, our
lovers, our favorite shirts. It is normal to be fearful and clinging. The dissolving of boundaries, however it may happen, is
automatically the dissolving of fear. Nirgun is nirbhay.” - Singing Emptiness by Linda Hess.

Illustration These are some doodles I gathered from my log book. The reason for the creation of these are not to fulfill
a certain brief or purpose. It is a natural process which flows out of me to express a state of mind.
