This document summarizes lessons learned from Aceh, Indonesia following the 2004 Asian tsunami. It describes how victims were initially housed in temporary barracks away from their homes and villages, while survivors promptly returned to their villages to rebuild. Through community mapping and planning exercises, survivors designed new housing and infrastructure that respected local traditions and provided community spaces. This people-driven reconstruction process resulted in over 3,000 houses and community buildings being rebuilt across 23 villages in Aceh. The rebuilding efforts received several awards and recognition for their community-focused approach.
