2. INTRODUCTION
One of the major Indigenous group living in Nepal.
Ta=Horse, Mang=Trader/rider. Believed that after
Nepal-Tibet war, horse riding soldiers of King Tsrong
Tschong Gampo permanently settled in the
Himalayan Hills & later became Tamang.
Tibeto burman speaking community. 92% speaks
mother tongue.
5.6 % of Nepalese population (1,282,304), Fifth
highest populated group of a country.
More than 40 sub caste.
3. SETTLEMENT
Prefer to live in higher, dryer elevations. High hills
east, north, south, west of Kathmandu valley.
Found in districts of Sindhupalchowk, Dolakha,
Rasuwa, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur,
Dhading, Makwanpur, Nuwakot, Ramechhap,
Chitwan & Kavrepalanchowk.
Some in west Bengal & Darjeeling.
Tamsaling. Tam=language spoken by Tamang,
Sa=Land, Ling=Territory.
Living close to Magar, Gurung, Rai, Limbu,
Brahmin, Chhetri & Newers.
4. HOUSING
• Villages are compactly built, street paved with
stones.
• Two storied building
Upper floor -> Storage of grains and keeping
possessions
Lower floor -> Kitchen, Dining, Bedroom
